Decanter

Coffee beans, tobacco and dark chocolate on the nose. Juicy and lively on the palate. Tannins are quite present and persistent, closing some of the fruit down, but they have a nice quality to them. Feels a little youthful and closed, waiting to really shine, but this has elegance. Chalky sensation on the finish with some spicy menthol notes lingering.

Espresso, black cherry, smoke, licorice, plums and dark cherries create a complex nose. On the palate, the wine is round, sweet, soft and polished, finishing with a nice sweetness to the dark red fruits with a touch of spice on the end note. This is a superb Bordeaux value wine that savvy consumers should take a serious look at. Drink from 2023–2034.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate red berry nuances, fresh cherry, a hint of mandarin orange. Medium complexity, fresh structure, round tannins, mineral on the finish, slender style, subtle sweetness, lemony aftertaste.

A classically dense Haut-Médoc with very fine extract and smooth tannins, well-maintained freshness, inky dark fruit, digest, with fine length and potential.

I loved the 2019 Château Malescasse, and this beauty has loads of ripe dark cherry and currant fruits, notes of cigar box and cedar pencil, medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done, and readers would love to have a case of this in the cellar for drinking over the coming 10–15 years. Bravo.

Dense damson and black cherry fruits, smooth, deft, silky; this is excellent, almost Pessac-like in its silky confidence but with plenty of Médoc tannic frame. There has been extensive restructuring at Château Malescasse over the past decade, including replanting 15 ha of vines, and this is one of the best examples that I can remember tasting at this stage. Owned by Philippe Austruy (also of Château Peyrassol in Provence, plus estates in Tuscany and Portugal). A yield of 23 hl/ha, 33% new oak.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Malescasse is made from 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps with notions of warm cassis, plum preserves, and wild blueberries, leading to hints of violets, pencil lead, and black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate is laden with juicy black fruits supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing fragrant.

Subtle bouquet, filigreed with notes of wild berries, licorice, and mint. On the palate, the wine shows character and fine-grained tannins. These provide breadth and ensure good ageing potential. Fruity, refreshing, and persistent finish.

The nose is fruity and offers fine concentration/density. It reveals notes of wild blackcurrant, wild raspberry and, more subtly, small wild blue berries, combined with delicate hints of violet and iris, as well as a touch of red berries, pencil lead, grey pepper and imperceptible hints of fresh blond tobacco. The palate is fruity, balanced, and offers a little tension, a fine tangy backbone, juiciness, and a subtle glycerol feel. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of juicy/tangy blackberry, tangy/ripe raspberry and, more slightly, small blue berries, combined with touches of pencil lead and fresh tobacco leaf, as well as hints of camphor and chocolate, and discreet notes of caramelisation/dried almond. The tannins are racy and refined.

Logo on the cork: DP Dark, intense color. Moderately intense nose, fruity and creamy. Caressing on entry, savory, with a hint of candied orange; the wine develops on a slender body, a touch astringent but without harshness. Medium length. Wait.

92–94. Barrel Sample. This stylish wine offers perfumed black currant fruit and velvety tannins. It has a fine, juicy character that brings out the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. There is great potential over the medium term.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Malescasse 2019

Tasting

Color

The color reveals a beautiful deep ruby red with violet highlights.

Nose

Powerful and precise, the nose charms with its great finesse and aromatic complexity. It reveals aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and wild strawberry, complemented by notes of licorice. As it opens up, hints of mocha, roasted coffee and menthol add an extra dimension to this elegant, fresh bouquet.

Palate

The attack is full and focused. The palate stands out for its silky texture and delicate volume. The tannins, fine and elegant, are perfectly integrated, offering both structure and suppleness. The palate reveals lovely juiciness and pleasant freshness, with notes of graphite and camphor that bring a mineral tension. The finish, long and persistent, brings the fruit back with elegance, carried by refined tannins.

Food and wine pairings

This Château Malescasse 2019 pairs perfectly with red meats such as a beef tournedos with morels, braised beef or an old-fashioned beef stew. It also matches very well with feathered game, roast or grilled lamb, as well as roast poultry. For cheese lovers, opt for aged cheeses such as Comté. More surprisingly, this wine also pairs well with Asian dishes such as Vietnamese phở or mushroom-based preparations.

Serving and cellaring

Château Malescasse 2019 benefits from being decanted for around 90 minutes before serving when young. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 15.5°C to preserve its freshness and elegance. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2038.

An elegant and complex Haut-Médoc born of Médoc gravel soils

The estate

Founded in 1824 in Lamarque, between Margaux and Saint-Julien, Château Malescasse is a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel from Haut-Médoc, at the heart of Bordeaux’s great gravel soils. Owned by Philippe Austruy (Vignobles Austruy) since 2012, the estate has benefited from a complete restructuring: a fully renovated cellar, a thoroughly reorganized vineyard, and a restored chartreuse. Its long-sought-after Médoc gravel terroir shapes a style defined by elegance.

The vineyard

The Château Malescasse vineyard spans forty hectares in a single block in the commune of Lamarque, in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Located at the highest point of the Médoc at thirty meters above sea level, it enjoys a prime geographical position close to the Gironde estuary. The terroir is made up of Quaternary gravels of Pyrenean origin, mixed with clay, limestone and sand, providing excellent drainage. The vines, averaging thirty-five years of age, are managed with parcel-by-parcel attention, favoring environmentally respectful viticultural practices. The estate has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3 since the 2019 vintage.

The vintage

The winter of 2018-2019 was dry and mild, leading to early budbreak. Spring alternated mild and cool periods with rainfall, creating delicate conditions for flowering, which nevertheless went well despite wind, cool temperatures and rain. The summer of 2019 was exceptionally hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding seasonal averages and reaching 40°C on July 23 and 24. Fortunately, summer rainfall prevented water stress despite the heat. September offered ideal conditions—warm, dry and sunny—allowing for a harmonious harvest spread out over time.

Vinification and aging

The Château Malescasse 2019 harvest was carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting on a vibrating table and by density sorting. After vertical destemming without crushing, parcel-by-parcel vinification took place in small wooden and concrete vats from 60 to 110 hectoliters. Maceration, lasting three to four weeks, favored gentle extractions through moderate punch-downs and short pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels. The aging of Château Malescasse 2019 continued for twelve months in barrels, divided into one-third new oak, one-third once-filled barrels and one-third twice-filled barrels.
