Description

A fine and delicate red wine from Margaux

The estate

Château Marquis de Terme is poised in the heart of the Margaux appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. The origins of the vineyard date back to the 15th century, but the estate took on its current name in the 18th century when the Marquis de Terme took over the running of the château. Since 1935, the Sénéclauze family has owned this Margaux Grand Cru.

The vineyard

Château Marquis de Terme 2016 is a Margaux wine that stems from a 39.5-hectare terroir. The vines are 35 years old on average and are planted in deep gravel soils, a typical feature of the appellation, made up of thick quartz and quartzite. Some plots have more clay.

The vintage

After an extremely mild and rainy winter, leading to an early budburst, the spring that followed was cool and just as wet. However, the flowering took place perfectly from June 6th thanks to a small window of pleasant weather and fairly high temperatures. The heavy rainfall in the spring led to significant mildew pressure until veraison. From the end of June, climatic conditions changed significantly and heat and drought set in. Water press on the young vines and the filtering soils was a concern. The first green berries appeared on August 1st and the delay in ripening heralded a late harvest. The drought led to delays in ripening, limiting the weight of the grapes. The rainy episode of September 13th saved the vineyard. The harvest was carried out in a serene manner from September 29th to October 21st, under ideal weather conditions.

Vinification and ageing

Aged for 16 to 18 months in barrels (50% in new barrels) depending on the vintage.

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (60%)
