Vinum

As usual, ripe-fruited, deep and complex. Rich palate, showing a silky texture and high-quality tannins, good tension, very good length, finishing spicy.

Decanter

The fragrance of rose and violets is on the nose and palate, edging the blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Harmonious and well structured, the concentration is there in the ripeness of fruit and there is a gentle density that is mouth filling but stays on the elegant refined side of things. A lovely crystalline purity to the fruit with the savoury elements in the background. Good energy here even though it feels like it's sleeping and not fully showing its true potential yet. Michel Rolland consultancy.

James Suckling

This shows notes of dried flowers, tapenade, citrus zest and mulberries. It’s medium-bodied, juicy and fresh with easy tannins and a bright finish. Drink in 2024.

Forward, medium-bodied, soft and fresh. The fruit is light, sweet and pure, though there is not a lot of weight and depth. This will be a pleasure to enjoy on release. Drink from 2024-2032.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep ruby, purple hues at the rim. Black cherries, a hint of plums, herbal savouriness and tobacco in the background. Medium-bodied, juicy fruit, leafy tannins, mineral, shows length and a touch of astringency.

Kunz barrel sample 2022: elegant, finely fruity, fresh, Burgundian bouquet, raspberries, wild strawberries, vanilla powder, delicate nougat. Densely woven, elegant, fresh palate with a dense, delicately creamy texture, powerful, refined fruit, fine tannins, varied, fresh, powerful aromatics, long, full finish. Can still improve.

André Kunz

Elegant, delicately fruity, fresh, Burgundian bouquet with raspberries, wild strawberries, vanilla powder and a fine hint of nougat. A tightly interwoven, elegant, fresh palate with a dense, gently creamy structure, powerful yet refined fruit, fine tannins, a diverse, fresh and intense aromatic profile, and a long, full finish. Can improve further. 17/20 2028 - 2050

Jane Anson

Plum colour, austere tannins but with the power to propel the sappy red fruits, giving a sense of momentum. Not exuberant, needs a few years in bottle and a good plate of food, but there is effortless quality and a mouthwatering finish. Hervé family, 16ha.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense color. Very aromatic nose with ripe fruit. Soft on the attack, juicy and precise mid-palate, well built; the wine stretches out on the finish, with flavor and a refined tannic frame. Good length.

Description

The structure and aromatic brilliance of a Fronsac red wine

The estate

Owned by the Hervé family, with its debut vintage in 1890, Château Moulin Haut-Laroque is located in the Fronsac appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Driven by the ambition of the Hervé family and equipped with a cutting-edge, modern vat room, the property is one of the jewels of the Fronsac appellation, producing wines that offer pure expressions of this great terroir.

The vineyard

Château Moulin Haut-Laroque 2021 is a Fronsac wine that stems from a 16.01-hectare vineyard. The vines are 55 years old on average and are planted on sloping hillsides. The soil is composed of clay and limestone and enjoys an excellent exposure.

The wine

Following the passing of Jean-Noël Hervé, 2021 is the first vintage made by his sons, Thomas and Frédéric.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are sorted three times with total destemming and handling the grapes entirely by gravity flow. Vinification is carried out without sulphur in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Fermentation takes place exclusively in barrels with extra-fine grains. The wine is aged for 18 months in new barrels (40%) as well as one and two-year-old barrels.

The blend

Château Moulin Haut-Laroque 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
