Description
A sophisticated and balanced Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé
The estate
Château Pavie Macquin was founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man who introduced grafted vines to France in order to save the country's vineyards from the destruction caused by phylloxera. Today, the estate still belongs to the descendants of Albert Macquin. This Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion is an essential reference of the appellation and is one of the greatest wines in the world.
The vineyard
An illustrious reference poised among fine Saint-Émilion wines, Château Pavie Macquin watches over a 15-hectare vineyard. The vines are 35 years old on average and are planted in clay-limestone soils on the appellation’s plateau of limestone rocks.
Vinification and ageing
Manual harvesting. Whole berries are vatted by gravity, then vinified by plot in concrete vats. Aged on fine lees for 16 to 20 months in barrels (50% of which are new) with a 1st racking after 6 to 10 months of ageing, the second a year later, before bottling.
The blend
Merlot (79%)
Cabernet Franc (19%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (2%).
