Chateau Villemaurine 2016: A fine and ripe red wine from Saint-Emilion

Classified Growth from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru appellation, Chateau Villemaurine is a vineyard with vines that are 35 years old (on average). The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils. Chateau Villemaurine 2016 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc

Chateau Villemaurine's 2016 is characterized by rain that did not cease until late June. The rain contributed to a smooth flowering period. Summer settled in in late June. July was quite cool and sunny and August was dry and scorching hot. The month of September was also quite hot, but brought relief. It rained mid-September which help finalize the ripening of the berries. Harvest began on October 10th.

Chateau Villemaurine 2016 has a very deep red colour. The nose is concentrated with fruity aromas. In the mouth, it is ample with round tannins and notes of sweet fruit. A fine and straight-forward wine, perfectly expressing the unique terroir of Saint-Emilion.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Villemaurine, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, has a ripe, glossy bouquet with maybe just a little more warmth showing through than some of its peers. There is more than enough black cherry and wild strawberry fruit here, though I would like to see more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit laced with soy. I appreciate the acidic drive to this Saint Emilion and the precision and minerality that comes through on the persistent finish. Impressive.
