A Marlborough Pinot Noir Combining Elegance and Purity at the Heart of Clos Henri

The Estate
Founded in 2000 by Rémi and Jean-Marie Bourgeois, the Clos Henri estate represents the New Zealand extension of the renowned Bourgeois family, historic owners in Sancerre and current owners of the property. Located in the Wairau Valley, within the Marlborough region, this vineyard spans 110 hectares. The estate stands out for its certified organic approach and precision viticulture without irrigation. By combining Loire Valley expertise with the unique terroirs of New Zealand, the estate produces wines renowned for their texture and remarkable finesse.

The Vineyard
The vines intended for this Marlborough wine are grown entirely on the estate according to organic farming principles and without any irrigation. Aged between 10 and 20 years, the vines are planted at a high density of 4,000 vines per hectare and pruned using the double Guyot method to limit vigour and concentrate the grapes, resulting in a controlled yield of 7 tonnes per hectare. This unique terroir is divided into three distinct soil types stemming from the overlap of two glacial periods: Wither clay, Broadbridge clay, and Greywacke stones.

The Vintage
2024 benefited from ideal weather conditions for the growing cycle. The season was marked by particularly dry weather, with rainfall limited to 374 mm, and warm days with an average temperature of 13.2°C. From March onwards, significant temperature swings set in. These climatic factors, combined with 1,386 growing degree-days, resulted in grapes of exceptional quality.

Winemaking and Ageing
After a rigorous sorting of the bunches following harvest, vinification begins with 10 to 20% whole bunches retained. The rest of the harvest is destemmed without crushing, then transferred by gravity into large open stainless steel vats. A week-long cold maceration precedes natural fermentation. Extraction is carried out gently through light pump-overs, with no punching down, allowing for fermentation and post-fermentation maceration lasting up to three weeks. Finally, the wine is aged for 11 months in large 7,500-litre French oak vats.

Grape Variety
This wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir.
