Description

Tasting Notes and Characteristics of Métairies du Clos 2023 from Clos Marie

Tasting

Nose
Remarkably intense, the bouquet reveals deep aromas of well-ripened red and black fruits, reminiscent of crushed blackberry. It is enriched with complex notes of garrigue, noble leather, liquorice and spices, rounded off by an elegant touch of mint chocolate.

Palate
Both dense and generous, the palate offers a remarkable balance. The structure, though imposing, retains a beautiful fluidity thanks to particularly velvety tannins. The whole stands out for its great finesse and stretches into a refreshing finish.

Food and Wine Pairing
This gastronomic wine pairs wonderfully with a rack of lamb, coq au vin or a black pork chop served with mushrooms. It will also beautifully enhance dishes with creamy textures and umami flavours, such as a spelt risotto with porcini mushrooms and aged Parmesan.

Serving and Cellaring
To fully enjoy the Métairies du Clos 2023, it is recommended to decant it one hour before tasting and to serve it at a temperature of 16 to 17°C. Built for ageing, this wine can be enjoyed from 2026 and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2036.

A Pic Saint-Loup Wine Combining Density and Freshness

The Estate
Founded in 1995 by Christophe Peyrus and Françoise Julien, the Clos Marie estate quickly established itself as an essential reference in the Languedoc. Located in Lauret, the property's origins lie in family vines inherited from Françoise's grandmother. From the very beginning, the couple made the pioneering and committed choice to cultivate the entire vineyard biodynamically. Today, the owners tend to some twenty hectares with absolute rigour, producing distinctive wines that showcase the freshness and complexity of their limestone terroir.

The Vineyard
Nestled on the foothills of the Hortus mountain and Pic Saint-Loup, the plots benefit from a pristine setting at the heart of the Mediterranean garrigue. The vines, aged between 40 and 60 years, thrive on hillside sites with clay-limestone soils, marl and colluvial deposits from the foothills. This high-altitude terroir, farmed according to biodynamic principles, allows for controlled yields and brings the natural freshness essential to the grapes' balance.

Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested with meticulous berry selection. The Métairies du Clos 2023 is vinified in truncated conical vats using indigenous yeasts and a partial inclusion of whole clusters. Extended macerations, accompanied by punching down, allow for gentle extraction. The wine is then aged for a prolonged period of 20 months in previously used barrels, with no new oak, in order to preserve the brightness of the fruit and the identity of the terroir.
