Description
Tasting characteristics and serving advice for Moncerbal by Descendientes de Jose Palacios
Tasting
On the nose, this Spanish wine reveals floral, redcurrant, and rhubarb aromas. On the palate, it offers notes of cherry and wild fennel, lively acidity, a lovely texture, and a delicate finish.
A great Bierzo wine showcasing the full beauty of its exceptional terroir
The estate
Descendientes de J. Palacios is the story of a family enterprise founded by Alvaro Palacios, a leading figure behind Spain’s wine revolution over the past twenty years, and his nephew Ricardo Perez. Named after Alvaro’s father and Ricardo’s grandfather, who passed away in 2000, the bodega Descendientes de Jose Palacios was established near the village of Villafranca del Bierzo, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain.
The vineyard
Driven by the desire to highlight the exceptional potential of the Bierzo DO, a wine region still little recognized, the Palacios family created a bodega in this area. They chose to settle near Corullón, drawn by the unique characteristics of the terroir. Indeed, this terroir stands out for its great diversity and arid soils, home to a vineyard of old vines dominated by Mencía, the emblematic black grape variety of Bierzo.
Winemaking and aging
Winemaking takes place in oak vats, with regular punch-downs and the use of native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation starts spontaneously in the same oak vat, after which the wine is aged in foudres and barrels.
