The Castille and Leon region is located at the North-West of Spain and is reknown for its typical and highly fruity wines. It gathers 9 "denominaciones de origen" also called appellations, such as Toro or Ribera del Duero for example. At the North-East of this region can be found the famous Rioja appellation (DOC). At the heart of the mountains, the soils are quite poor, the winters are harsh and the summers are very hot. Consequently, the wine production is low but the quality is undeniable. The following varietals are planted on 40 000 hectares: Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dona Blanca, Godello, Garnacha and Verdejo.
