Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Flor de Pingus 2024 by Dominio de Pingus
Tasting
Appearance
Flor de Pingus 2024 has an intense, brilliant ruby colour, with a rim that is still tinged with violet, a sign of its youth. Slightly lighter than Pingus, this hue reflects the Grenache in the blend and points to a balance between density and finesse.
Nose
The nose of Flor de Pingus 2024 offers a rich, precise aromatic range, blending red fruits (raspberry, cherry, strawberry) with black fruits (blackberry), lifted by floral notes of violet and sweet spices. This palette conveys both the freshness of the fruit and the depth imparted by ageing.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is broad and textured, carried by dense fruit and a firm yet already elegant tannic structure. It comes across as a structured wine with impressive length, in which ripe fruit interplays with a taut minerality drawn from the soils of La Horra.
Food and wine pairings
Flor de Pingus 2024 is a superb match for roasted, grilled or braised red meats, as well as slow-cooked dishes with spicy, Mediterranean flavours. It also pairs beautifully with lamb dishes seasoned with sweet spices, stuffed roasted vegetables or hearty meat-based rice dishes.
Serving and cellaring
Flor de Pingus 2024 is best served between 16 and 18°C, allowing it time to breathe before tasting so that its aromas can fully unfold. According to the available recommendations, this vintage can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2040.
An iconic Spanish wine from Ribera del Duero by Dominio de Pingus
The estate
Dominio de Pingus was founded in 1995, when Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck produced the first vintage of Pingus in La Horra from old Tempranillo vines. Still run by Peter Sisseck today, the estate, located in Ribera del Duero in Castile and León, has become a benchmark for Spanish biodynamic viticulture, built on demanding small-scale production, a precise understanding of limestone soils and deep respect for the terroir of La Horra.
The vineyard
The vineyard that produces Flor de Pingus 2024 comprises 42 plots spread across 14 named sites in the municipality of La Horra, in Ribera del Duero, covering a total area of 47.29 hectares. All of these plots are farmed directly by the estate's team, with yields deliberately limited to 20 hl/ha and a planting density of 4,000 vines per hectare, a regime applied to the protected plots since 2016.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage in Ribera del Duero was marked by spring frosts in April that threatened part of the vineyard. The estate responded by protecting its plots with paraffin candles, preserving most of the crop despite challenging weather conditions throughout the season.
Winemaking and ageing
Flor de Pingus 2024 is made through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, at a temperature of between 21 and 23°C. Pump-overs were reduced to around 30% of the volume previously used, in order to preserve the finesse of the tannins. This Spanish wine is aged for around 14 months, 80% in barrels, 10% of which are new, and 20% in 20-hectolitre foudres.
Grape varieties
Flor de Pingus 2024 is a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Grenache.
