Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for PSI 2024 Dominio de Pingus
Tasting
Colour
A deep yet luminous colour, characteristic of the estate, reflecting the natural concentration that comes from the extremely low yields of the old vines of La Horra.
Nose
The nose is aromatic and remarkably refined, true to the Pingus style: it typically reveals ripe black and red fruit alongside floral, spicy and mineral notes that express the limestone character of the terroir.
Palate
On the palate, this complex yet highly successful vintage should display a structure of great finesse, carried by very fine tannins and a chalky signature that lengthens the finish, in a style that favours precision of fruit and elegance over sheer power.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with flavourful red meats and game dishes that can stand up to its concentration and tannic structure: roast pigeon with a rich jus, civet or daube of hare, roast lamb with Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary or thyme, or dry-aged beef and grilled rib-eye steaks.
A full-bodied, balanced Ribera del Duero wine
The estate
Dominio de Pingus was founded in 1995 by Danish oenologist Peter Sisseck in Quintanilla de Onésimo, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Built around a few hectares of very old Tempranillo vines planted in 1929 near La Horra, the brand has established itself as one of the region's essential benchmarks, thanks to a minimalist winemaking philosophy, extremely low yields and biodynamic vineyard management. Peter Sisseck remains at the helm of the estate today as owner and technical director, making Pingus one of Spain's most sought-after cult wines.
The vineyard
The grapes for this Castilla y León wine come from plots spread across several villages in the Ribera (Peñaranda de Duero, Gumiel de Izán, Zazuar, San Juan del Monte, Langa de Duero, La Vid y Barrios), sourced both from vineyards owned by GAI (233 plots, 75.32 ha since 2023) and from grapes purchased from selected growers throughout the region.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage is described as climatically complex but ultimately very successful. The vines destined for Pingus were harvested between 10 and 17 September, yielding ripe yet balanced grapes despite the challenges faced during the year.
Winemaking and ageing
PSI 2024 is made using plot-by-plot fermentations in small vats, with indigenous yeasts and very carefully controlled extraction, with decisions on devatting made through daily tasting. This Spanish wine is then aged around 20% in old barrels and the remainder in 5,000-, 6,000- and 10,000-litre foudres, for twelve to sixteen months depending on the vintage and the components of the blend.
Grape varieties
Tempranillo 90% and Grenache 10%.
