Description
The balance and aromatic richness of an emblematic Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine
The estate
The Domaine des Sénéchaux vineyard boasts origins that date back to the 14th century. Taking its name from the Bois Sénéchaux area, one of the largest plots of land on the estate, Domaine des Sénéchaux was acquired by the Cazes family in 2006, owners of the prestigious Château Lynch-Bages, a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé.
The vineyard
An emblematic reference point among the finest Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, the estate watches over a 27-hectare vineyard that spreads over the appellation’s most noble terroirs.
The vintage
Although budbreak was early (mid-March), the particularly cool conditions from the beginning of May led to an uneven flowering period and heavy run-off. Despite the low rainfall, the summer heat did not affect the vineyard and rather favoured the gradual ripening of the grapes.
Vinification and ageing
The beginning of the vatting period is accompanied by delestage, then pigeage. Vinification in temperature-controlled vats. Total vatting time between 29 to 35 days. While the Syrah varietal is aged in first-fill barrels, the Grenache Noir grapes are aged in tuns.
The blend
Grenache Noir (47%)
Syrah (32%)
Mourvèdre (19%)
Cinsault-Vaccarèse (2%)
Domaine des Sénéchaux Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017: Characteristics and tasting tips
The tasting
Nose
Expressive and intense, the nose mixes fruity (raspberry, cherry), spicy and woody fragrances.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied, balanced and fresh. An expression of ripe red fruit (blackcurrant, raspberry, candied Morello cherry) and spices (liquorice, pepper) harmoniously blend with subtle resinous notes, hints of wood and very fine tannins.
Food and wine pairing
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 red by Domaine des Sénéchaux will complement a confit lamb served with lemon and rosemary.
