Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2023 by Domaine Ponsot
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a beautiful golden hue.
Nose
Remarkably aromatic, the bouquet reveals intense notes of white-fleshed fruit and citrus. With time, it evolves towards complex aromas of quince paste, honey and dried fruit.
Palate
Full and generous, the palate offers a lovely roundness, perfectly balanced by well-judged acidity and a pronounced minerality that truly reflects its limestone terroir.
Serving and Cellaring
This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth to make the most of its aromatic vibrancy, yet it also has a firm structure that will allow it to age gracefully in the cellar for several years.
The Unique Expression of a Great Aligoté from a Côte de Nuits Terroir
The Estate
Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, Domaine Ponsot is a historic name in Burgundy, based in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. This family estate of around eight hectares, made up largely of grand cru parcels, is now run by Rose-Marie Ponsot, who represents the fifth generation. Pioneers of estate bottling as early as the 1920s, the family stands out for its distinctly minimal-intervention philosophy. The estate is renowned worldwide for its authentic wines, which combine deep respect for nature with great technical precision.
The Vineyard
The "Monts Luisants" climat is a one-hectare monopole located on the slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis. This distinctive terroir lies on thin, clay-rich soil made up of layered scree over a bedrock of white oolite and limestone. The parcel stands out for its high planting density of 11,000 vines per hectare and its goblet-trained vines. A true living heritage, 85% of the vines were planted in 1911. The vineyard is farmed sustainably, without any fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides, with meticulous soil work and harvesting carried out entirely by hand.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Clos des Monts Luisants" 2023 is crafted with a natural, minimalist approach. After rigorous sorting directly in the vineyard, the whole bunches are gently pressed. The must undergoes deliberate pre-oxidation before spontaneous fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels averaging fifteen years old, with no new oak and no lees stirring. It is neither fined nor filtered.
