Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 red by E. Guigal

Tasting

Appearance
With its deep, dark red colour, this wine immediately catches the eye.

Nose
The nose opens on expressive aromas of ripe red fruits, beautifully underlined by well-pronounced spicy notes.

Palate
Rich and smooth, the palate delights with its complexity and power, while offering tannins of lovely roundness.

Food and wine pairings

This red wine pairs wonderfully with classic meats such as beef, veal, pork or lamb, whether roasted, braised or in stews. It also complements game, duck, poultry with herbs, as well as more rustic dishes such as cassoulet. Finally, it goes surprisingly well with moderately spiced Asian cuisine, tuna-based dishes, mushroom pasta, or a selection of aged cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. While already accessible in its youth, this wine will reveal its full potential after a few years of cellaring and can be enjoyed until around 2034.

The estate

Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the historic village of Ampuis, the E. Guigal House has become a true institution of the Rhône Valley. First developed by Marcel Guigal, the estate is now led by the third generation, embodied by Philippe Guigal, oenologist and director of the domain. Guided by its motto "Nul Bien sans Peine", the family brilliantly combines a highly selective négociant-éleveur activity with the production of its own estates, establishing itself as an essential reference for lovers of Rhône wines.

The vineyard

This wine is made from grapes rigorously selected from trusted partner winegrowers located in the southern part of the region. This meticulous approach captures the very essence of the terroirs of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, drawing on long-standing relationships founded on a shared commitment to quality.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by extreme weather conditions, with intense drought and early heatwaves as soon as June. Despite this lack of water and the very high summer temperatures, the region's old vines demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting perfectly to this climate to deliver lower yields but highly concentrated berries, while preserving a beautiful freshness.

Winemaking and aging

The aging of this Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 extends over a period of approximately two years. It takes place in foudres, large wooden vessels that have already held other wines. This traditional method brings structure and complexity to the wine while limiting the aromatic impact of new oak.

Grape varieties

This blend is predominantly composed of Grenache, complemented by a small proportion of Mourvèdre and potentially a touch of Syrah.
