Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Direct, with a pure beam of black currant and black cherry purée, underscored by a flash of licorice and some mulling spices on the sleek finish. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2026. 6,000 cases made, 900 cases imported.

Decanter

Rich and heady fruit aromas on the nose, expressive and full. Nicely bright red and black fruits on the palate, clear and precise – a touch of smoke, tobacco, white pepper and cedar spice suggests the wood needs to soften a little bit but the fruit is really well presented, crisp and with bite. Lovely licks of stone and salty minerality put you in the Médoc and this has an easy style to it with a long, fresh finish. Cool, classic and darkly charming.

Attractive aromas of redcurrants and plums with some chocolate, follow through to a medium body, with round tannins and a juicy finish. Soft and open. Crunchy acidity at the end. Drink now.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Round, supple and easy-drinking with plummy red fruit to the fore. Light tannic frame. Astonishing balance given the relatively high pH (3.94). (JL)

Antonio Galloni

The 2020 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is very pretty and aromatic. Élevage has filled out the layers nicely, but this remains a decidedly aromatic, mid-weight vintage for the château's Médoc. Sweet pipe tobacco, leather, mint, cinnamon and dried cherry build nicely in the glass. The 2020 has come together nicely.

Licorice, black cherries, vanilla, espresso bean and nuances of roses create the nose. Medium-bodied, forward and fruity, the wine is soft, round, and leaves you with a polished, red cherry finish. Drink from 2023-2032.

Generous notes of chocolate and dark berries, some new oak, a plush and rounded style, yet with fine tannins giving lift; crunchy red and dark berries with fine length.

A terrific wine, the 2020 Goulee By Cos D'Estournel sports a healthy ruby/purple hue as well as ripe aromatics of currants, sandalwood, damp earth, and leafy tobacco. This medium-bodied, silky, juicy, ready-to-go Médoc is perfect for enjoying over the coming 7-8 years.

So interesting tasting this against a wide range of AOC Médoc wines. It's a more expensive bottle than many of them, but it is confident, crafted and full of personality. Cocoa bean, espresso, plentiful berry fruit, touches of mandarin peel and lemongrass to lift things on the finish, slate texture tannins, good stuff.

The 2020 G d’Estournel has a deep garnet-purple color. It features notes of raspberry leaves and fresh blackberries, plus touches of tar, bay leaves, and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate is light on its feet, with nice freshness and a chewiness to the finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A candid, very open bouquet with developed notes of baked fruit and forest floor. On the palate, a beautiful concentration of fruit that is simultaneously rich, ripe, and tangy, finishing on indulgent tannins.

André Kunz

(90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46 hl/ha, 13.17% vol. alcohol) Velvety, dense, powerful bouquet, prunes, tobacco, roasted notes, delicately vegetal. Powerful, well-structured, aromatic palate with finely sandy tannins, spicy aromatics, finely muscular structure, long, robust finish. 17/20 2025 - 2040

A ripe wine with soft red fruits, this has fine tannins under the juicy freshness. Drink this attractive wine from 2025.

Description

The typicality of a Médoc wine by Cos d´Estournel

The estate

Situated north of the Médoc, on the hill of Saint-Estèphe, Cos d’Estournel appears in all its majesty. Like a true palace of the Maharajah, the chateau and its pagodas surprise and captivate the eye. In 1791, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel inherited some hectares of vines and built the estate. A passionate adventurer who travelled the world, his taste for the exotic and the East inspired the architecture of Château Cos d'Estournel, truly unique in the Medoc. Owned by Michel Reybier since 2000, Chateau Cos d'Estournel continues to shine bright in the Saint-Estephe appellation and has joined the lineage of the greatest wines in the world. The wines of the estate are distinguished by their unique style, product of an enduring quest for beauty and excellence. This 2020 vintage marks for Michel Reybier twenty years in the management of Château Cos d´Estournel.

The wine

For the 2020 vintage, Goulée by Cos d'Estournel has been renamed G d´Estournel. This wine produced in the Médoc appellation is produced with the same rigour and exacting standards as the other wines of the property.

The vineyard

Enjoying an exceptional geographical location, the Cos d'Estournel vineyard is situated on the edge of a plateau, in the immediate vicinity of the Gironde estuary. The vineyard benefits from a maritime climate and is protected from bad weather. The vines are planted on two hillsides and a central plateau, where they experience ideal sun exposure and great ventilation.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage will be remembered for the early development of the vines. Between October 2019 and February 2020, some episodes of rain helped create sufficient water reserves. A warm spring with heavy rainfall favored early but heterogeneous bud burst. Nevertheless, this heterogeneity was limited by work on the soil, which allowed it to heat up more quickly. While the warm temperatures and heavy rainfall in April raised concerns about the health of the vines, the good weather conditions in mid-May allowed for a rapid and uniform flowering. The months of June and July were extremely dry (5mm of precipitation in 55 days), causing significant water stress. Due to this dry weather accompanied by cool temperatures, a careful leaf stripping was carried out on the eastern side of the vineyard (where the sun rises), in order to encourage the phenolic synthesis of the grapes. Rainy days at the beginning of August revived the ripening process of the grapes. The great location of the vineyard and the work of the vineyard teams minimized the health risks associated with high humidity and heat. The Indian summer leading up to the harvest allowed for the optimal ripeness of the grapes. Taking into account the precocity of the vintage and the high temperatures of September, the decision was made to harvest early, in order to preserve the tension and density of the grapes.

The blend

The G D'Estournel 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
