Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Charmes-Chambertin 2023 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The glass reveals an intense, luminous colour, typical of the region's great vintages.

Nose
The bouquet opens with pure aromas of cherry, before evolving towards woody notes and fine spices reminiscent of white pepper and nutmeg. Subtle touches of musk perfect this complex ensemble.

Palate
The palate offers a remarkable balance between power and refinement. Carried by noble tannins and a silky texture, the attack reveals a fine liveliness that leads to a persistent, harmonious finish.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with roasted feathered game, poultry in wine sauce or beef bourguignon. It also goes very well with wild mushroom dishes, truffle recipes, as well as soft cheeses such as camembert or brie.

Service and storage

This grand cru reveals its full potential when served at a temperature of 16°C. Built for aging, it will reach its peak within fifteen to twenty years, and can continue to evolve in the cellar until around 2053, provided optimal storage conditions are maintained.

The authentic expression of Burgundy by Maison Joseph Drouhin

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure of its terroir. Now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin presiding over the executive committee and Véronique Drouhin as cellar master, the estate oversees a vast vineyard. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture, the estate stands out for its early commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. Combining tradition with respect for the environment, the family crafts wines renowned for their finesse and their faithful expression of the Burgundy climats.

The vineyard

The terroir of Charmes-Chambertin spans just over 27 hectares within the Côte de Nuits. South- and east-facing, at an altitude of between 240 and 280 metres, the vines benefit from ideal sun exposure. The soils consist of brown earth, scree and a clay-limestone mixture resting on Jurassic marl rich in marine fossils. The grapes come from rigorously selected partner growers, who share the estate's environmental philosophy by applying nature-friendly farming methods.

The vintage

2023 stands out for its particularly warm temperatures, offering ideal growing conditions. This climatic generosity resulted in consistent yields and grapes of exceptional quality. Harvesting took place under optimal weather conditions, ensuring fruit with fully achieved phenolic ripeness, fine concentration and well-preserved natural acidity.

Winemaking and aging

To craft this cru, the grapes are hand-harvested in perforated crates to preserve their integrity. Upon arrival at the winery, meticulous sorting is carried out to retain only the finest fruit. Vinification favours gentle extraction to avoid harsh tannins, followed by extended aging in barrels allowing the wine to develop its full complexity.
