Characteristics and tasting notes of the Montagny 1er Cru 2023 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a pale, luminous hue.

Nose
The nose reveals aromas of golden apple, fresh almonds and fern, subtly enhanced by a delicate citrus touch.

Palate
The palate opens with a lively, precise impression, evolving towards a lovely roundness. Supported by vibrant acidity, the tasting stretches into a long finish with luscious flavours reminiscent of stewed fruit.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs perfectly with seafood, poached shellfish or delicate steamed fish. It also goes wonderfully with white meat in sauce, such as veal, a mixed paella, or cheeses such as goat's cheese, Comté and Beaufort. It can also be thoroughly enjoyed as an aperitif.

Service and storage

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature of 13°C. This Montagny 1er Cru 2023 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve favourably until around 2031.

The elegance and freshness of a white wine from the Côte Chalonnaise

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic institution in Burgundy. Established by a young wine merchant, the estate has grown to become a leading name in the region. Now led by Frédéric Drouhin, the house oversees a vineyard of approximately 100 hectares spread across 60 appellations. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the 1980s, the estate stands out for its hybrid model combining its own production with a demanding négociant business. The family thus continues to uphold a unique style, always favouring elegance, finesse and the authentic expression of terroir.

The vineyard

The Montagny appellation forms the southernmost part of the Côte Chalonnaise. The vines, situated at an altitude ranging between 250 and 400 metres, benefit from excellent east and south-east exposure, favouring optimal ripening of the grapes. The terroir is characterised by predominantly limestone and clay soils, typical of the great white wines of the region. For this cuvée, the house draws on its négociant business, rigorously selecting fruit from partner winegrowers bound by long-term contracts, thereby ensuring the estate's quality standards are upheld.

The vintage

2023 stands out as one of the hottest seasons recorded in the region, even surpassing the temperatures of 2022. The growing cycle was marked by sustained heat and significant water stress during the growth phase, accompanied by heavy mildew pressure. Despite these climatic challenges, the grapes reached perfect maturity by harvest time.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Montagny 1er Cru 2023 are harvested by hand into perforated crates, followed by careful sorting. The berries then undergo slow pneumatic pressing to separate the juices and control phenolic intensity. After light settling, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in French oak barrels. Aging continues for 12 to 14 months in these same barrels, with a deliberately limited proportion of 10 to 15% new oak, to preserve the purity of the fruit.

Grape variety

Chardonnay (100%).
