Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

Prominent licorice, dried herbs, forest strawberry, black cherry and a whiff of crushed rocks introduce the complex 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe-Rac. Full-bodied, concentrated and neatly structured by ripe tannins, the 2023 is an immediately alluring Barbe-Rac that’s full of so much life and energy that it almost feels weightless. This is really good stuff.

Decanter

A promising nose: strawberry, blueberry and black cherry, with a fragrant lift. Only medium-bodied for a Châteauneuf, the extraction is light, resulting in a wine with transparent red fruits and florals on the palate. The tannins are light but present, gently tense, with the slightest bitter note that brings a certain structural freshness. No great concentration or power, but this has good freshness and balanced alcohol. Very fine, with no discernible aromatic oak influence. From old vines grown on galets roulés, 30% to 40% whole bunch.

Layers of soft, supple, cherries, peppery kirsch, herbs, and spices. The wine is balanced between its soft, ripe, round, lush fruits and its structured side, giving it, its ability to age, and develop. There is a lot to like to here. The wine is produced from 100% old, vine Grenache. Drink from 2027-2042.

Description

A full-bodied and lively red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

As a winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed to lead this family business to the top over the vintages. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Barbe Rac cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine resulting from a rigorous parcel selection. Averaging 90 years old, the vines are planted on a plot with complex geology, composed on the surface of rolled pebbles from the former bed of the Rhône. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

Vinification and aging

The grapes undergo a first rigorous sorting during the harvest. Vinification in closed concrete vats. Maceration for about 3 weeks at a temperature between 30 and 33°C. Exclusive use of the runoff wine. Aging in vats for a period of 16 months.
