Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Joe Czerwinski

Produced from mainly estate grapes from around Tournon, Mauves and Saint-Joseph, the 2016 Saint Joseph les Granilites Blanc was raised in 60% oak and 40% stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied with bold honey and quince notes on the nose and plenty of concentration and weight. It does push things a bit far on the long finish, where a hint of bitterness takes over.

Slightly deeper gold in color, the 2016 Saint Joseph Les Granilites Blanc (100% Marsanne all from fine, granite soils) was bottled late in June (the entry-level whites are bottled in April), fermented partially in demi-muid and foudre, and aged in 10% new barrels (there are parts in foudre and stainless steel). Buttered citrus, crushed rocks, white flowers and a kiss of honeysuckle give way to a medium bodied, balanced, impressive white that has richness and freshness, as well as loads of character. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Saint-Joseph "Les Granilites" 2016 by M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Colour

Beautifully clear, the wine reveals a pale yellow hue illuminated by subtle green highlights.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet opens with delicate notes of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit. With aeration, superb mineral touches and light toasted nuances add further complexity.

Palate

The full and generous attack precedes a mid-palate combining lovely tension with a seductive volume. The persistent, saline finish reflects the nobility of its granitic terroir.

Food and wine pairing

This great white wine will pair wonderfully with fish in sauce, poultry in cream sauce, or matured cheeses such as Saint-Félicien.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate its aromatic range, this wine is best served between 10 and 12°C. It can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2026.

The mineral and elegant expression of a great white wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Founded in 1808, the M. Chapoutier house has established itself as a true institution within the Rhône Valley. Under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier, the estate has skillfully combined tradition and innovation to reveal the quintessence of its terroirs. A pioneer in the biodynamic approach, the estate is dedicated to producing wines of great purity that faithfully reflect their origin.

The vineyard

The Saint-Joseph "Les Granilites" white 2016 comes from vines planted on highly weathered granite soils. This poor, well-draining terroir, typical of the appellation, gives the wine a distinctive minerality and great finesse.

Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting at optimal ripeness, the grapes are gently pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, preserving the freshness of the fruit while adding complexity. Aging continues on fine lees for several months, with regular lees stirring to nourish the wine.
