Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Raspberry, cherry, rose and mint aromas and flavors highlight this elegant red. Harmonious and bright, with a silky feel and a light dusting of powdery tannins on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

Orange peel, cherries, and roses on the nose. Fresh and perfumed. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a fresh and lightly chewy finish. A refinement and beauty to this. Drink now or hold.

Audrey Frick

Layers of pine, balsamic, kirsch, and menthol emerge from the 2019 Barolo Tortoniano, nicely balanced by the floral perfume of pressed roses. A medium-bodied and well-structured red, it has ripe tannins, a fresh spine of acidity, and lingering notes of leather and fresh soil. It is charming now, but it certainly has the structure to drink well over the next 8–10 years.

Description

The opulence and precision of a great wine from Piedmont

The estate

Since 1956, the Michele Chiarlo estate embodies the excellence of Piedmont wines. It was in that year that the eponymous oenologist founded his own house with a clear ambition: to sublime the Piedmontese grape varieties and terroirs through a precise and respectful winemaking process.

Located in Calamandrana, in the heart of the Barolo appellation, the estate produces wines with a recognizable style, combining aromatic richness, balance and tannic finesse.

The vineyard

Michele Chiarlo operates an exceptional 110-hectare vineyard spread across the Langhe, in the north of Italy, on a mosaic of plots revealing the full diversity of Piedmontese soils.

The wine

The Tortoniano cuvée comes from prestigious plots located in the Barolo appellation area.

Grape variety

Tortoniano 2019 is made exclusively from nebbiolo.
