Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Excellent balance along with copious quantities of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit are found in the 2001 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux. Light to medium-bodied, with a style similar to its bigger sister, but neither the concentration nor length, it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

Wine Spectator

Fresh and floral, with hints of berries and vanilla. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh, fruity finish. Refined. Best after 2007. 20,000 cases made.

René Gabriel

02: Around half of the harvest was downgraded to the second wine: a spicy bouquet threaded with floral Cabernet aromas, slight inky nuances, clove tones, and at its core a peppery, racy note. A slender, elegant palate with plenty of licorice and a noble, fine bitterness within a medium-dense extract; the expression, shaped by Cabernet’s presence, comes across a bit cool yet remains fairly persistent. 04: We showed the wine on my Germany tour, and I was surprised by the color, which currently seems darker to me than Margaux itself. The bouquet feels almost a touch compote-like at the top and, lower down, laced with red, just-ripe berries. The acidity is already quite soft, so this charming second wine can be enjoyed now. 16/20 drink – 2013

Description

The freshness and tannic structure of a Second Wine from Margaux

The estate

With origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is among those Grands Crus that have built the legend of the great wines of Bordeaux around the world. In 1855, the estate was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to receive a perfect score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the property in 1977 by André Mentzelopoulos, Château Margaux began a new chapter in its history. Elevating the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the estate’s Second Wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, first created in 1908. Following in her father’s footsteps after his untimely passing, Corinne Mentzelopoulos carried the family standard with energy and passion to preserve the standing of Château Margaux, now a Bordeaux masterpiece, instantly recognizable for its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s wines rank among the greatest in the world.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Margaux owes its uniqueness to its rare and singular terroir, located on a gravel mound. The estate’s plantings give pride of place to the region’s flagship red variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, without forgetting Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s clay-limestone soils give rise to legendary wines, both refined and sensual, so representative of the Margaux appellation.

The vintage

Despite a rainy winter, flowering was rapid and uniform. Summer conditions were optimal for the vineyard, due to an unusual alternation of warm and cool, dry and wet periods.

Blend

This Pavillon Rouge 2001 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
