Van Volxem Wines : Key Points

In the heart of Wiltingen, one of the first winegrowing strongholds in Germany's Saarland area, the Van Volxem estate was originally a renowned monastery. The Van Volxem family became the owners this property in the 18th century. This Mosel estate, located near the famous Egon Müller estate, was acquired by Roman Niewodniczanski in 2000. He continues to boast these Mosel wines by showcasing the precision, passion and perfection of these utter gems.

The Van Volxem vineyards are located on exceptional terroirs on the banks of the Saar. The slate soils are south-facing. The cool climate of the river Saar, combined with the exceptional terroirs, gives the estate's Riesling grapes a rich aromatic palette and a beautiful intensity. The vines, some of which are free-standing, are meticulously cultivated with respect for the environment and the rules of organic farming. A fervent advocate of manual work in the vineyard, Van Volxem is careful to limit yields in order to keep only the most beautiful and perfectly mature grapes. For Roman Niewodniczanski, hand-worked vines are the key to producing fine wines.

Following manual harvesting, the grapes are taken to the cellar, which overlooks the river Saar, and are vatted using a gravity-fed system to preserve their fruit and finesse. Vinification at Van Volxem is a crucial stage in the revelation of the terroir and the grape variety. The winemaking process is carried out in the most natural way possible, with no oenological additions except for a pinch of sulphur to stabilise the wines. The attention to detail is at its very height in the cellars of this exceptional estate. For example, Roman Niewodniczanski himself selected the oak trees that now make, after 12 years of drying, the barrels in the cellar.

The white wines of Van Volxem are among the finest in the world. The elegance, aromatic complexity and structure of these fine German white wines are the result of exceptional work.
