James Suckling

Intense aromas of black fruits with blueberries, lead pencil and graphite. Wet earth as well. Full-bodied and layered with very fine tannins and a juicy and savory finish. There is such polish and beauty to this. Reminds me of the 1967. Best after 2030.

The 2021s come from a mild, even year that allowed plenty of hang time and solid ripeness. The wines certainly don’t lack for power or density, even if they might not have the same overall concentration as 2020. The 2021 Vintage Port clearly shows the even style of the vintage and offers a concentrated yet fresher, elegant profile with classic young Port aromatics of cassis and jammy black and blue fruits that give way to more candied violet, flowers, licorice, and cedary herb nuances. This beauty takes plenty of air to shed its primary fruit, but it’s not far off the style of 2019 and is full-bodied, beautifully balanced, shows a terrific sense of freshness, and has more than adequate structure to evolve for 40+ years in cool cellars.

Description

The richness and finesse of a great Port signed Quinta do Noval

The estate

As early as 1715, records mention the name of the Quinta do Noval. António José da Silva, a merchant at the port of Gaia in Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after it had been ravaged by Phylloxera. Subsequently, his son-in-law Luiz Vasconcelos Porto implemented a significant vineyard renovation programme. He notably expanded the narrow dry-stone terraces that shape the landscape of the Douro vineyard. Revolutionary at the time, this method promotes better use of space and sun exposure. Painted with lime, these white terraces remain a specificity and a pride of the Quinta do Noval vineyard, an emblematic reference of great Portuguese wines.

The vineyard

Vintage Port comes from an exceptional terroir where the encounter between a remarkable soil and a microclimate offers the ideal conditions for the production of great Porto wines. On the south side of the Douro, in Portugal, the 138 hectares of vines of the Quinta, aged 30 to 40 years, cover a soil influenced by shale located at an altitude varying from 130 meters to 350 meters. The climate is dry and is characterised by its extreme peaks of freshness and heat.

The wine

Quinta do Noval only declares exceptional harvests as Porto Vintage. Known for their balance, harmony and elegance, these Vintage Ports come from an exceptional terroir and a rigorous selection of the best wines making up the final blend. This Vintage Port from Quinta do Noval represents 14% of the production.

The vintage

The viticultural year began with a wet winter and early bud break in March. After a rainy spring, flowering took place in early May, announcing an early harvest. The month of June was marked by storms and hail, sparing the estate. The mild summer allowed for slow and regular maturation of the grapes. Harvesting began at the end of August, but the September rains temporarily interrupted the harvests. Finally, the harvest ended on October 8 under favourable conditions, ensuring good phenolic evolution of the grapes.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are foot-trodden to obtain the must, then they macerate in the lagares, the traditional stone vats of the Quinta, to ensure optimal extraction of aromas, colour and tannins during fermentation. The wine is aged for 18 months in wooden barrels in the air-conditioned cellars of Quinta do Noval before being bottled.

Blend

This Vintage Port 2021 from Quinta do Noval is made from a blend of touriga nacional, touriga francesa, tinto cão, sousão and tinta roriz.
