Description
A fruity and flavoursome Tuscan red wine
The estate
The Rocca di Frassinello estate stems from the association between the highly reputed Chianti Classico estate, Castellare di Castellina, and the Domaines Barons de Rothschild Château Lafite. Established in 2007 and designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, Rocca di Frassinello produces great Maremma Toscana wines.
The vineyard
The Baffonero vineyard benefits from an excellent north/south-west exposure and a very good ventilation, which moderates the temperatures between night and day, thus favouring the slow ripening of the grapes while developing their aromatic expression and maintaining a pleasant acidity. The soils of the Baffonero vineyard, which are mainly composed of clay schist, allow for excellent drainage while limiting the yields of the vines and result in exceptionally aromatic and concentrated grapes and a beautiful tannic structure.
The wine
Rocca di Frassinello's 2018 Sughere di Frassinello is a Maremma Toscana wine that has been produced since 2004, from grapes planted in the commune of Gavorrano. Its fifth vintage (2008) was included in the Wine Spectator's Top 100.
The vintage
A very wet winter gave way to a cool spring which delayed the budding of the vines. The heat during summer was beneficial and helped to refine the ripening process. The optimal amount of sunshine combined with the sea breezes and the thermal amplitudes enabled the harvest to take place between the end of August and mid-September. The grapes were concentrated, revealing a beautiful acidity, a full structure and a superb freshness.
Vinification and ageing
Vinification in vats. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Aged for 18 months in barrels (50% new) followed by 9 months of bottle ageing.
The blend
Sangiovese (50%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (25%)
Merlot (25%)
