Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Glenkinchie 27 Year Old The Floral Treasure Natural Cask Strength
Tasting
Appearance
This spirit reveals a deep gold hue with rich, slightly amber highlights. In the glass, it shows a silky texture, with fine small bubbles forming on the surface and pronounced legs that testify to its density and natural strength. Its colour is entirely natural, with no added caramel.
Nose
Remarkably elegant, the nose opens with an intensely floral bouquet evoking meadow flowers, jasmine, honeysuckle and elderflower. It then moves towards orchard fruits (green apple, peach, melon) and fresh citrus. Indulgent pastry notes of biscuit dough, vanilla custard and toasted almonds blend subtly with more complex nuances of clove, sandalwood and leather.
Palate
The attack is soft and airy, with a creamy, opulent texture. The mid-palate proves rich and fruity, carried by flavours of apples, pears and citrus reminiscent of lemon meringue pie. The influence of European oak gives structure, bringing a spicy liveliness (ginger, cinnamon, clove) alongside notes of fudge and orange marmalade. The long, dry finish leaves a sophisticated impression, weaving together woody tannins, honey, flowers and a refreshing hint of menthol and eucalyptus.
Pairings and Tasting Occasions
This exceptional spirit calls for contemplative sipping, ideally in the late afternoon or evening. It is best served at room temperature (18–22°C) with a few drops of water to soften the alcoholic power and fully release its floral and fruity aromas. When it comes to food, it pairs beautifully with delicate fruit- and cream-based desserts (thin apple tart, pear crumble, lemon meringue pie). It also makes a superb match for uncooked pressed cheeses (young Comté, mild Cheddar), fine lightly smoked fish, or a light, floral cigar.
Mixology
As this is an exceptionally rare whisky of venerable age, we recommend enjoying it neat or with a small splash of water to appreciate its every nuance. For a bolder experience, however, it can shine in a minimalist highball topped with a high-quality neutral sparkling water and a citrus twist, or in a very pared-back Old Fashioned made with a very light syrup and floral bitters, so as not to mask its delicate profile.
Glenkinchie 27 Year Old: The Floral Elegance of a Lowland Single Malt
Glenkinchie, The Edinburgh Malt: History and Expertise
Founded in 1837 in the Lowlands, some twenty kilometres from Edinburgh, the Glenkinchie distillery has become an essential benchmark of Scotch whisky. Historically rooted in a tradition of farm distilleries that championed local barley, it has stood the test of time and is now owned by the Diageo group. Nicknamed "The Edinburgh Malt", Glenkinchie is renowned for its bright, grassy and floral style, typical of its terroir. With a capacity of around 2.5 million litres of pure alcohol per year, the distillery has traditionally supplied the group's great blends. Yet it also asserts its own identity through prestigious, rare bottlings. Recently renovated to enhance the visitor experience, Glenkinchie strikes a perfect balance between historic heritage and modernity, offering discerning enthusiasts an exceptional showcase of the Lowland art of distillation.
Crafting a Lowland Treasure
Part of the prestigious annual Diageo Special Releases 2023 collection, themed "Spirited Xchange", this exceptional Single Malt is the oldest official expression ever bottled directly by the distillery. This rare Scotch whisky, distilled exclusively from malted barley in the late 1990s, is a non-vintage 27 Year Old The Floral Treasure Natural Cask Strength.
It owes its character to a long, meticulous maturation of nearly three decades in a combination of refill casks: American oak casks (ex-bourbon), which bring softness and vanilla notes, and European oak casks (ex-sherry), which lend depth and spice. This precise technical choice preserves the floral delicacy of the spirit while giving it a complex structure, without ever resorting to unusual finishes that would mask its essence.
Bottled on 28 February 2023, this release stands out for its exclusive packaging adorned with motifs inspired by the porcelain of the great Chinese dynasties, a visual expression of the richness of its orchard aromas. Offered in very limited quantities in selected markets, it is aimed at collectors and connoisseurs seeking a pure, authentic expression magnified by time.
