Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Octomore Edition 17.3

Tasting

Appearance
Octomore Edition 17.3 reveals a pale golden yellow hue, clear and luminous, reflecting five years of maturation in first-fill bourbon casks and second-fill European wine casks. Non-chill-filtered and free of any artificial colouring, this whisky retains a slightly oily texture, visible in the well-defined legs that run down the glass, a sign that its aromatic compounds have been fully preserved.

Nose
The nose opens with notes of salted caramel and smoked apple, soon joined by the sweetness of toasted coconut, vanilla cream and praline. An earthy, ashy smoke then unfolds, evoking cigar ash and pine tar, underpinned by a hint of cocoa and the coastal salinity characteristic of Islay. As it breathes, orchard fruits such as tart apple and apricot soften the whole, in a subtle interplay between indulgence and smoky intensity.

Palate
The attack is rich and indulgent, driven by salted caramel, smoked apple and toasted coconut, before praline and vanilla cream add a pastry-like dimension. The palate then shifts towards a saltier, smokier register, with notes of burnt wood, charred earth and aromatic herbs, lifted by a touch of citrus oil. The texture is dense and oily, carried by an ABV of 60.9% that highlights the power of the peat without ever overwhelming it, in a remarkable balance between muscularity and elegance.

Pairings and Tasting Occasions

Octomore 17.3 is best enjoyed neat, or with a few drops of water to soften its power, in a calm setting that lets you follow its aromatic evolution. Its intense smoke and coastal salinity make it a natural companion for aged hard cheeses, smoked or grilled meats, as well as moderately sweet desserts built around notes of caramel and cooked fruit. A whisky best kept for moments of contemplative tasting, at the end of a meal or an evening.

Mixology

An exceptional product, Octomore 17.3 is above all to be savoured without artifice, neat or with a dash of water, in order to preserve the integrity of its aromatic complexity and the richness of its Islay terroir.

Octomore 17.3, Extremely Peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from an Exceptional Terroir

Octomore, Bruichladdich's Most Heavily Peated Expression

Launched in 2008 by the Bruichladdich distillery on the west coast of Islay, the Octomore range has established itself as the benchmark for “super heavily peated” Scotch whiskies. Each edition explores a precise combination of barley terroir, peat level and maturation, embodying the philosophy of the “Impossible Equation”: combining extreme peat with genuine aromatic elegance. Bruichladdich, whose island roots and commitment to local farms are at the heart of its identity, now belongs to the French group Rémy Cointreau, which oversees its international development while preserving its artisanal character and Victorian-era expertise. Octomore stands out for the youth of its whiskies, often aged five years, and for the detailed traceability of its barley, sometimes down to a single plot, making this range a unique laboratory of experimentation in the world of Scotch whisky.

Edition 17.3, a Peated Single Malt Shaped by the Terroir of Octomore Farm

Edition 17.3 belongs to the Octomore 17 series and stands out for its focus on terroir: the Concerto barley used, 100% Islay-grown, comes from a single field, Irene's Field, located on Octomore Farm, around two miles from the distillery. This peated single malt whisky has a phenol content of 132.1 ppm, one of the highest levels in the series, and a natural ABV of 60.9%, with no chill-filtration or artificial colouring. Its five-year maturation combines first-fill bourbon casks with a selection of second-fill European wine casks from Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, Eiswein and Syrah, creating layers of aromas that blend smoke, fruit and vinous notes. Presented as a “spirit-led” expression, Edition 17.3 showcases the grain, its provenance and the place, embodying Bruichladdich's ambition to connect its extreme whiskies to precise, traceable local farming.
