Characteristics and tasting tips for Springbank 10 Years Old
Tasting
Nose
The nose reveals delicate and complex notes of fresh pear, green apple, and creamy vanilla. Added to this are citrus aromas, strawberry, and the hallmark touches of Campbeltown: a subtle smoke accompanied by cedarwood, heather honey, and sea salt. The malt speaks clearly in this maritime and spicy nose.
Palate
The attack is soft and rounded, with a generous, oily texture that envelops the palate. Flavors reveal butterscotch, yellow fruits like apricot and mirabelle, as well as dark chocolate. Spicy hints of white pepper and ginger provide a fine structure, while a light peat balances the whole. You’ll also find notes of tinned pear and citrus. The finish is long and persistent, carried by notes of smoked wood, dried fruits, and a touch of salt that recalls Campbeltown’s characteristic maritime influence. It lingers particularly on melon and smoke.
A Campbeltown single malt with maritime character and a gentle peat profile
Springbank, an iconic family-owned Campbeltown distillery
Founded in 1828 in Campbeltown, Springbank embodies the excellence of traditional Scotch whisky. Independent, it belongs to J.&A. Mitchell & Co., a landmark family-owned company in the region. Unique in Scotland, the distillery controls the entire process on site, from traditional floor malting to bottling. Its original “two-and-a-half times” distillation gives Springbank its hallmark complexity. The House offers three distinct ranges: Springbank (lightly peated), Longrow (heavily peated), and Hazelburn (triple-distilled and unpeated), preserving ancestral expertise and an undiminished artisanal identity.
Springbank 10 Years Old, an authentic expression of the Campbeltown style
Springbank 10 Years Old perfectly embodies the distillery’s authentic and distinctive style. The distillery uses a unique traditional process: it malts the barley in the traditional way with peat-fired drying, then distills the spirit two and a half times, creating a singular and recognizable aromatic profile. From a blend of malts matured in ex-bourbon casks (60%) and ex-sherry casks (40%), this Scotch whisky offers a subtle balance between sweetness, fresh fruitiness, and smoky notes, making it an ideal introduction to discovering the malts of this magnificent Campbeltown region.
