Description
A lively and refined Tuscan wine
The estate
With a reputation that has spread from Italy's Mediterranean coast to the international scene, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia has established itself as one of the greatest names in Italian wine. Founded in 1981, this jewel in the heart of Tuscany is now owned and run by the Frescobaldi family. In the space of just a few decades, the exceptional expertise of the house, supported by consultant oenologist Michel Rolland and oenologist Axel Heinz, has established the reputation of these great wines around the world, while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines in the light of a great terroir.
The wine
Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Tuscan wine developed from Bolgheri vineyards.
The vintage
A mild, wet winter preceded a particularly dry March. Bud-break occurred in the first half of April. The mild weather then encouraged uniform plant development and flowering began at the end of May. Although the summer was hot and dry, this did not lead to intense water stress, thanks to sufficient water reserves, resulting in small, concentrated grapes. The harvest took place in September under warm, sunny conditions.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes, picked in 15-kilo crates, are sorted by hand before and after destemming, then lightly pressed. For even greater precision, optical sorting has been used since the 2016 vintage. Vinification is carried out on a plot-by-plot basis, according to grape variety. After 15 days of alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel and concrete vats, maceration takes place over a period of 10 to 15 days, depending on the batch. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, followed by ageing in oak barrels (25% new, 75% one-wine) for 15 months. At the end of the 12th month of ageing, the wines are blended and then put back into barrels for three months. Finally, after bottling, the wines spend a further 6 months in the cellar before being released on the market.
