Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Erin Larkin

The inky 2022 Bella's Garden Shiraz is saturated, positively dripping in purple fruit on the nose. It has cassis, milk chocolate, raspberry and licorice and the all-too-familiar splay of earth-derived tannins on the palate that speak eloquently of the Barossa, with iodine, red earth, brick dust and pastrami. It's an epic wine. 14.6% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Angus Hughson

This bold, chocolate-laced 2022 Shiraz Bella's Garden opens with a broad swath of berry fruits lifted by red earthy tones and a gentle splash of spice. It is mouth-filling with impressive concentration and generous tannins that provide a long, strong finish. The 2022 is an excellent vintage for the label.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the "Bella's Garden" Shiraz 2022 Two Hands

Tasting

Colour
This Australian wine reveals a beautiful red colour.

Nose
Generous and complex, the aromatic bouquet expresses notes of blueberry and blackberry compote, harmoniously blended with touches of rose petals, flint and charcuterie.

Palate
Velvety and full-bodied, the palate reveals an elegant and supple structure, supported by perfectly integrated tannins. It unfolds savoury notes of blackcurrant, black pepper and subtly smoky oak, complemented by nuances of plum, red cherry, cranberry and a hint of crisp apple. The whole is distinguished by its vibrancy and beautiful finesse.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with full-flavoured meats such as rosemary-grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef short ribs or a fine matured cut of beef. It will also enhance game dishes, wild mushroom preparations or rich tomato-based sauces.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience of the "Bella's Garden" Shiraz 2022, it is recommended to decant it between thirty minutes and one hour before serving, ideally at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, in large Bordeaux-style glasses. Already very approachable, this wine will reveal its full complexity and evolved aromas if cellared until around 2032.

The authentic expression of a Barossa Valley Shiraz

The estate

Founded in 1999, Two Hands was born from a desire to showcase the diversity of Australia's terroirs. Located in the Southern Australia region, this house quickly gained international renown thanks to its meticulous approach. Now run by owners Michael Twelftree and Pierre-Henri Morel, the estate is distinguished by its hybrid model, sourcing the finest fruit from partner growers while also developing its own vineyard. The estate celebrates the richness of each parcel through cuvées of remarkable precision.

The vineyard

The grapes for this cuvée come from the western ranges of the Barossa Valley, an area renowned for its red and brown earth soils. This unique geological profile, combined with naturally low yields, promotes excellent berry concentration while lending the wine a well-defined structure. The estate places the utmost importance on environmental stewardship, favouring sustainable practices such as manual pruning, the use of organic compost and the preservation of local biodiversity.

The vintage

2022 stands out for its very fine quality, despite limited yields. Winter rains in 2021 helped build up good water reserves, although episodes of frost, hail and wind during flowering affected volumes. The summer season, cooler than usual and free of rainfall, provided ideal conditions for slow and steady ripening. Warm days and cool nights at the start of autumn rounded off this cycle, giving the grapes wonderful aromatic complexity.

Winemaking and aging

For the "Bella's Garden" Shiraz 2022, the berries are destemmed, crushed and then fermented in open vats with regular pumping-over to extract colour and aromas. Some batches include 20% whole clusters with manual punching down. After a maceration period of around fourteen days, the wine is transferred to barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation. Aging then takes place over eighteen months in French oak barrels, 17% of which are new. The wine is finally bottled without fining or filtration, in order to preserve its full authenticity.
