Nicolas Greinacher

The perfumed 2023 Saint-Joseph Les Serines comes out shining as it opens with pronounced orange rind, crushed violets, black cherry and nuance-driven pencil shaving facets. Midweight and cleanly shaped, the 2023 is a delicious Les Serines, centering the last notes with fine-brushed detail on the complex finish. Give it one more year in bottle to fully come around.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the 2023 Saint-Joseph "Les Serines" Yves Cuilleron

Tasting

Colour
This French wine displays a deep red colour.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals itself as complex, dominated by scents of very ripe black fruit and white pepper. Touches of liquorice and sweet spices complete this olfactory harmony.

Palate
The attack is direct and precise, giving way to a rich, dense texture that rounds out delicately. Mineral freshness balances the aromatic power, supported by silky, fine tannins. The finish stands out for its beautiful length and persistent minerality.

Food and wine pairing

This Yves Cuilleron pairs perfectly with roasted or braised red meats, particularly lamb. It also goes wonderfully with beef, game such as venison, as well as dishes flavoured with aromatic herbs like thyme or rosemary.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Saint-Joseph "Les Serines" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.

The mineral and authentic expression of a Rhône terroir

The estate

Officially founded in 1920 by Claude Cuilleron, the estate is located in Chavanay, at the heart of the Rhône Valley. Since 1987, Yves Cuilleron has run this family estate with a vision focused on excellence and respect for the terroir. The vineyard now spans around a hundred hectares across several prestigious appellations. A fervent advocate of sustainable farming and minimal-intervention winemaking, the estate champions the authentic expression of its terroirs. The reintroduction of ancient varieties and the promotion of single-parcel cuvées illustrate the qualitative commitment of this essential producer of the region.

The vineyard

The vines destined for this Saint-Joseph cuvée flourish on particularly steep slopes, making any mechanisation impossible and requiring meticulous manual labour. This northern terroir is characterised by soils composed of pure granite. The vines come from a massal selection of old vines, favouring authentic expression and natural adaptation to local conditions.

Winemaking and aging

The making of the Saint-Joseph "Les Serines" 2023 relies on a minimalist approach. After harvesting at optimal ripeness, the grape bunches are partially destemmed. Fermentation begins thanks to indigenous yeasts in open vats for around three weeks, punctuated by regular punching down and pumping over. The wine is then transferred into small oak barrels aged between one and four years for an eighteen-month maturation period. Finally, it is fined using egg white, with no filtration prior to bottling.
