Description
A very complex Margaux wine made with a biodynamic approach
The estate
A Classified Growth in the Official Classification of 1855, Château Palmer is a real star of the Margaux appellation, on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. With biodynamic viticulture launched in 2009, Château Palmer has chosen to convert the entire vineyard in 2014. Having built its legacy on vintages that have become legendary, Château Palmer continues to write its history under the direction of the talented Thomas Duroux.
The vineyard
Upon an exceptional terroir in the immediate vicinity of the Gironde estuary, Château Palmer has fairly unusual grape varieties for a Medoc estate, with Merlot given pride of place, supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
The wine
Since its launch with the 1998 vintage, the greatly elegant Alter Ego de Palmer is intended as another facet of the expression of Château Palmer wines.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage began with a perfectly rainy winter, which regenerated the soil. Then, spring offered excellent conditions for the flowering to take place. Summer, on the other hand, was characterized by the instability of the weather, which caused a delay in veraison. Fortunately, the month of September reversed this trend, modifying the profile of the fruit. The grapes were harvested at perfect maturity.
The blend
The Alter Ego de Palmer 2014 is made from a blend of Merlot (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%) and Petit Verdot (13%).
The tasting
The Alter Ego de Palmer 2014 fully reveals the personality of two emblematic Bordeaux grape varieties. The biodynamic approach is felt in the profile of this wine, which is made without sulphites. The admirable complexity of the grape is wonderfully brought to light. The black fruit is generous, dense and complete. On the palate, an impression of righteousness, through a lively attack - acidity that never leaves until the ultimate sensation - remains, giving way to an aromatic mid-palate, with a very elegant, even refined texture. The whole is very balanced, sapid and suggests a wine of excellent conception.
Service and cellaring
Palmer's Alter Ego 2014 will develop its aromatic complexity after ageing for several years.
