Description
The refinement and expression of a Lombardy wine by Ca' del Bosco
The estate
When Annamaria Clementi purchased a small house on a hill in Ebursco in 1964 and planted vines there, her son Maurizio’s life changed forever. Only fifteen at the time, the young man discovered the fabulous terroir of Franciacorta. Fascinated by the Champagne method, he embarked on a quest for excellence that has continued to inspire Ca’ del Bosco ever since. Maurizio Zanella has become an iconic figure in the revival of Italian wines, producing some of the country’s most renowned organic-certified red, white, and sparkling wines. With this talented winemaker at its helm, there is no doubt that this trailblazing estate still has many chapters left to write.
The vineyard
Corte del Lupo Rosso is crafted from grapes grown in plots located in the communes of Cazzago San Martino and Passirano, in the heart of the Curtefranca appellation. The Merlot vines, averaging 30 years old, stand alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Carménère vines with an average age of 31 years. These vineyards benefit from an exceptional terroir ideal for expressing these Bordeaux grape varieties.
The vintage
The year 2022 began with a mild winter and little rainfall, resulting in budbreak about a week late. The rapid flowering in the second half of May was followed by a period of drought and water stress until the end of July. The much-needed rainfalls on July 28, mid-August, and late August allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, which were harvested between August 30 and September 23.
Winemaking and aging
The hand-harvested grapes are placed in small crates, cooled in a cold room, and then undergo a rigorous selection. After gravity-fed destemming, maceration lasts 20 days for Merlot, Carménère, and Cabernet Franc, and 21 days for Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcoholic fermentation is accompanied by pump-overs. The wine is racked from the bottom and the juice is reintroduced onto the cap to promote the extraction of tannins and color. After draining off the wine, it is transferred to small oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. The lots are then blended and aged for 23 months. Bottling is done by gravity, followed by an additional 5 months of aging before release.
Blend
This Corte del Lupo Rosso 2022 from Ca' del Bosco is a blend of Merlot (49%), Cabernet Sauvignon (31%), Carménère (11%), and Cabernet Franc (9%).
