An outstanding Franciacorta Extra Brut from Ca' del Bosco in Lombardy
The estate
Founded in the 1970s by Maurizio Zanella in Erbusco, Ca' del Bosco embodies the excellence of sparkling wines from Lombardy. Since the first plantings in 1968, the estate now spans 8 municipalities within Franciacorta. Maurizio Zanella transformed the family property of Annamaria Clementi into an essential benchmark. State-of-the-art facilities, a gradual transition to organic farming, and a philosophy that unites oenology and art are the hallmarks of this house.
The vineyard
Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut comes from a selection of vineyards in Franciacorta, spread across several municipalities. The Chardonnay comes from 185 plots in Erbusco, Adro, Cazzago San Martino, Corte Franca, Iseo, and Passirano, with vines averaging 25 years of age. The Pinot Blanc comes from 8 plots in Passirano, where the vines have an average age of 32 years. The Pinot Noir is grown on 52 plots in Erbusco, Provaglio d'Iseo, and Passirano, with vines averaging 21 years old.
The cuvée
Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut is the result of a multi-vintage blend, made up of 88% base wines from the 2023 vintage, complemented by 10% reserve wines from 2022 and 2% reserve wines from 2021.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage saw a cold, rainy spring with a risk of frost at budbreak, followed by a cool summer until mid-August and then around twenty hot days. The harvest, carried out in the second ten-day period of August 2023, made it possible to pick early fruit with high acidity and excellent sugar concentration, while the later pickings revealed notes of riper fruit.
Winemaking and aging
The Ca' del Bosco method used for Cuvée Prestige Edizione 48 Extra Brut begins with hand-harvesting into small crates. The grapes are sorted, cooled, and then hand-selected before undergoing a “berry spa” featuring three soaking tanks and a drying tunnel. Pressing is carried out in the absence of oxygen. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The base wines are stored until March—around 7 months—so they can clarify and mature before blending. The cuvée then ages for at least 2 years on the lees. Bottling takes place between April and June of the year following the harvest, for an average lees aging of 25 months. Disgorgement is carried out in an oxygen-free environment using an in-house process.
Grape varieties
This wine from Lombardy is a blend of Chardonnay (80.5%), Pinot Noir (18%), and Pinot Blanc (1.5%).
