Earthy, tobacco leaves, underbrush, olives, spice, and red fruits come through on the nose. On the palate, the medium-bodied wine is fresh, and soft, displaying a slightly rustic elegance, olive-stained, red fruit palate. Clearly, this is one of the best wines for the money you can buy from the Cotes du Rhone, if not in the entire Southern Rhone Valley. The wine is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 30% Mourvedre along with10% Cinsault. Drink from 2022-2032.

Bottled a month ago, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet sports a vivid ruby hue and is a blend of 30% each of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, with the balance Cinsault. It’s a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has lots of ripe red and blue fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue and leather. Drink this juicy, elegant Côtes Du Rhône over the coming decade.

Description

The depth and aromatic richness of a Rhône Valley red wine

Founded in the 16th century, Château de Beaucastel was taken over at the beginning of the 20th century by Pierre Tramier. His son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, gave the estate a new lease of life, while its considerable reputation was developed beyond its borders thanks to Jacques Perrin. Jacques Perrin's sons and grandsons continue to perpetuate the estate's quest for excellence, making the family estate one of the finest labels in the Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

Coudoulet de Beaucastel 2020 from Château de Beaucastel is a Rhône Valley wine that stems from a 30-hectare vineyard. The vines are planted on a soil made up of Miocene marine molasse and rolled pebbled, presenting a clear similarity to the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its ability to store the intense heat of the sun during the day and release it at night, this soil helps the vines to get off to an optimum start in the spring.

The vintage

This Côtes du Rhône wine is the fruit of a vintage marked by favourable weather conditions. Milder than 2019, this year was tempered by winds, keeping the vines cool. The summer season was marked by relatively mild temperatures. Continuity of winds and cool nights played a decisive role in the vineyards. The harvest began on 26 August and lasted until the end of September, producing grapes of exceptional quality.

Winemaking and ageing

After being harvested by hand, the grapes are sorted and then heated to 80°C before being cooled to 20°C. Each grape variety is vinified separately. After a 12-day maceration in concrete vats, the juice is pneumatically pressed. Malolactic fermentation is followed by a blend of the different grape varieties separated during vinification. The wine is then aged for 6 months in oak tuns.
