A Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac with Intense Black Fruit Aromas
The Estate
Created in 1675 by Arnaud Ducasse in Pauillac, Château Grand-Puy Ducasse today spans 40 hectares across eleven different soil types. This Fifth Growth Classified in 1855 in Bordeaux has the unique distinction of being the only château to vinify in the heart of the town of Pauillac for the past 200 years. Led by Thierry Budin and Anne Le Naour, the estate proudly upholds its motto “Regis Semper Amici.”
The Vineyard
The vineyard of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse in Pauillac enjoys an exceptional location spread across three historic parishes. Considered the most representative of the diversity of Pauillac's terroirs, it extends over three large plots located in the finest parts of the appellation, offering a mosaic of soils that contributes to the aromatic complexity and aging potential typical of the classic Pauillac style.
The Vintage
The year 2011 was marked by unusual weather conditions, with an “inverted” climate pattern. After a very cold winter with normal rainfall, spring proved exceptionally dry and warm with strong sunshine. Flowering took place from May 10 to 25, followed by véraison from July 15 to 30. Summer was cool and humid with little sunshine, requiring patience and carefully managed risk-taking to achieve perfectly ripe grapes.
Vinification and Aging
The grapes for Château Grand-Puy Ducasse 2011 are hand-harvested with a double sorting carried out both in the vineyards and at the winery. After destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Part of the malolactic fermentation occurs in new barrels. Aging continues in French oak barrels with 40% new wood for this vintage, for 18 to 24 months.
