Vinum

Dark-fruited, with a hint of honeydew melon; a dense, creamy, rounded palate showing opulence, ripe, generous fruit, tannins already well integrated, almost Tuscan in character; very nice length and a fiery finish on dark chocolate and ripe cherry fruit.

Decanter

A seductive and sculpted wine, leaning into the vintage’s glamour and richness. The nose is deep and heady, filled with violets, dark chocolate, blackcurrants, and espresso. The palate is glossy and rich, with a juicy, shiny black fruit core, balanced by fine, slightly bloody tannins. There’s an undercurrent of freshness, with a minty lift and a touch of creaminess that enhances the plush texture. Toasted wood notes still need time to integrate, but this is smooth, seductive, and beautifully structured. A wine of depth, polish, and lasting finesse. Ageing 45% new oak, 10% foudre, 15% amphora. 3.88pH.

James Suckling

A classic Evangile from a hot and great vintage with black olives, cedar and brambleberries. Medium-bodied, it has balance and refinement, a solid core of fruit and a sophisticated and polished mouthfeel. The finish is very long, increasing with precision. A graceful and age-worthy wine. Best after 2029.

Truffle, flowers, dark chocolate, black cherries, licorice, and chocolate-drenched plums create a rich aromatic profile. The wine is deep, concentrated, lush, and abundant. Opulent, plummy, and sapid, it requires a few years in the bottle to fill out, soften, and develop its velvety characteristics. The wine blends 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc, and 0.05% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2029 to 2055.

The Grand Vin 2022 Château L'Evangile is more serious and concentrated, with beautiful red and black fruits interwoven with truffly earth, tobacco, and savory, floral, spicy nuances on the nose. These carry to a medium- to full-bodied, voluptuous, round, sexy L'Evangile that has soft, supple tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a mix of both richness and elegance. It's not massive and is already hard to resist, yet it should have 30 years of longevity.

Beautiful depth of flavour across the palate, with nuanced blackberry and damson fruits, orange peel, saffron, crayon, cassis. Great quality, with flesh through the mid-palate, coupled with lift on the finish, impressive. Harvest from August 29 to September 14, in organic conversion, Juliette Couderc winemaker, Saskia de Rothschild owner. Yield of 28 hl/ha.

Le Figaro Vin

A serene, majestic nose leads into a palate of dazzling juiciness that rises inside the cheeks, vibrating with energy and floral finesse. Then suddenly, a wave of salinity appears—sharp and invigorating—like the icy spray of a raging Atlantic off the coast of Scotland. The finish weaves cocoa nuances into this electrifying salinity.

A superb bouquet where freshness is acclaimed through nuances of peony, blackberry, liquorice and even a touch of orange zest. Elegant on the attack, the wine underlines its power through fine-grained tannins that hold everything in place and provide a framework to carry the wine through the decades to come. Clearly, the centerpiece is about showcasing without raising the voice. The Evangile team listened closely to the vineyard. Kudos for letting it speak for itself. A mouthwatering, even saline, and above all persistent finish. A beautiful achievement highlighting an exceptional symbiosis, exemplary of what can be done in Pomerol in a hot, dry year.

Dark, intense, beautiful colour. Very aromatic nose, delicate, fruity, pure, fresh and vanilla-accented. The palate shows meticulous tactile precision, with a fine touch and a tighter frame than usual. The wine builds on the finish, with fine tannins and plenty of flavour. Slightly firm structure that will soften during ageing. Blend: 82% Merlot, 17.5% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcohol: 14.5% - pH: 3.83. Yield: 28 hl/ha.

A ripe wine with a smoky aroma, showing some wood aging on the palate while also having solid tannins. It is a rich smoky wine with concentrated tannins and developing black fruits. Drink from 2028. Organic.

Description

The balance and aromatic richness of a Pomerol red wine

The estate

Château L'Évangile was gradually built up by the Léglise family from Libourne in the mid-18th century, and was soon considered a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol." After being owned by the Ducasse family, in 1990 that Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite purchased the estate, keen to elevate it to its highest level. From the vineyard to the cellar, Château L'Évangile has undergone major restructuring and modernisation, enabling the estate to become one of the finest references in the Pomerol appellation.

The vineyard

Château L'Évangile is a Pomerol wine from a vineyard in a privileged position between Château Pétrus to the north and Château Cheval Blanc to the south. The vineyard is planted on sandy-clay soils with pure gravel, resting on a subsoil made up of the famous iron residue.

The vintage

The vintage was marked by drought. Budburst on 7 April. The vines stopped growing early and defoliated in areas of superficial gravel. Despite the extreme weather conditions, the grapes were able to retain their aromatic richness and optimum freshness.

Blend

Château l'Évangile 2022 is a blend of Merlot (82%), Cabernet Franc (17.5%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (0.5%).
