Description
A structured and aromatic red wine from Pomerol
The estate
Owned by the Raynaud-Lebreton family and with origins dating back to 1477, Château La Fleur de Gay is located on the medieval road from Saint-Émilion to Guitres. The property is set in what was once the historic village of Pomerol, the hamlet of Pignon, north of the Pomerol appellation.
The vineyard
The Château La Fleur de Gay vineyard covers 2 hectares of vines on a fantastic terroir typical of the Pomerol appellation. The vines are planted in 3 plots on the high terrace of Pomerol. The vines stretch their roots into soils of pure clay from Lafleur (4%), Gunzian gravel on clay (57%) and grainy gravel on Groupey clay (39%).
The vintage
2020 was a vintage marked by significant contrasts (up to 26 °C of daily summer thermal amplitude) and a very challenging meteorology (almost 2 months without rain). The nature of the great clayey terroirs of the Pomerol appellation has made it possible to transform these constraints into assets for the vineyard. The grapes revealed a beautiful complexity and a rich aromatic palette.
The vinification and ageing
Manual harvest. Vatting from 34 to 35 days. Gentle extractions. The malolactic fermentation is carried out partially in barrels. The ageing is carried out in barrels (70% new oak, 30% second-fill oak), in order to develop the complexity and the fruity aromatic palette of this great vintage.
The blend
The Château La Fleur de Gay 2020 is a 100% merlot.
