Vinum

Superb, multi-layered aromatics of herbs, flowers, spices and berries, absolutely captivating even at this stage; full-bodied attack, juicy, seamlessly dense development, long, fruity finish; an outstanding wine, one of the best ever bottled here.

Decanter

Lovely perfumed, floral and fruity nose—generous and inviting aromatics. Good texture here, smooth with fine-grained tannins; the fruit isn’t super bright or exuberant for now—it’s dense, compact and more subdued. Linear and direct, with taut, austere tannins that are quite present at the moment. Good quality, with a cooling finish that’s very appealing.

James Suckling

Plenty of chocolate, tobacco and blackcurrant character on the nose. It’s full-bodied with chewy, polished and present tannins. Long and intense. This is rather tight and mouth‑puckering. Give it time to soften. Very structured. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2025.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample. Pep and vitality on a rather refined, dark-fruit and floral nose. Plenty of backbone but the tannins finely honed. Long and linear with drive and persistence, yet with sufficient mid-palate fruit to fill the holes. Clean finish. Should stay the course. (JL)

The 2019 La Lagune is fabulous. A wine of power, depth and tension, the 2019 is compelling right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, rose petal, sweet pipe tobacco and blood orange lend striking complexity. Persistent and engaging, the 2019 is a thrilling La Lagune loaded with class, personality and pedigree. It's one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. Don't miss it!

Roses and lilacs, along with sweet, ripe cherries, emerge in the bouquet. Medium-bodied, soft, silky, fresh, and focused on purity and refinement, the wine is effortless to drink, finishing with layers of polished red fruits, touches of cocoa, and just a hint of spice and savory herbs. This will compete with any of the best vintages La Lagune has ever produced and should age for decades. Drink from 2024–2042.

Falstaff

Dark ruby, purple reflections, broad and bright rim. Delicate notes of cassis and lime zest, fine herbal spice, a hint of red currants and wood. Medium body, red cherries, integrated tannins, subtle sweetness, some vanilla on the finish, mineral and persistent, a food wine with ageing potential.

The 2019 Château La Lagune is terrific and well worth seeking out. Ripe dark cherries, currants, smoky tobacco, and cedar pencil notes define this utterly classic, medium-bodied, balanced Haut-Médoc. With plenty of tannins as well as good concentration, it's going to hit maturity in 7-8 years and have two decades or more of longevity if properly stored. It's an impeccably put together wine. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc.

Weinwisser

Bright purple with a ruby core. Compote-like bouquet with cherry jam and lingonberry juice. Mid-palate shows a soft texture, sinewy body and finely brittle extract, with delicate stony-kernel notes underneath. Focused finish with red-berry contours, juniper and rosewood, ending with gentle astringency.

Kunz barrel sample 2020: (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 14% alc. vol.) Herbaceous, light bouquet, red cherries, wood, silage. Slim, firm palate with sweet fruit, finely sandy tannins, good aromatics, bourgeois structure, herbal finish. Can still gain further complexity.

Tight but finely layered tannins, black truffle and cedar spice on the nose, with bright blueberry and bilberry fruit. Enjoyable, deftly put together. 40 hl/ha yield. Organic certified, in conversion to biodynamics.

Tasted after bottling, its nose is reserved, but the palate is built on fine substance, good density, and a finish with tannins that will need to meld. Pleasant saline touch on the finish.

The bouquet of La Lagune 2019 is truly beautiful, marked by an authentic, very precise and inviting character. It reveals nuances of cedar and wild berries, followed by a hint of licorice. On the palate, the wine stands out for its creamy texture and powerful yet well-integrated tannins. This is certainly one of the best La Lagune of the past 15 years, highlighting this estate’s ability to produce great wines.

Dark, intense, and beautiful color. Very aromatic nose, with ripe, spicy fruit reminiscent of Petit Verdot. Delicate on entry, with a lovely core of dark fruit mid-palate; the wine caresses the palate, flavorful, with a touch of liveliness on the finish, but without any tannic edges. Normal length.

Description

The freshness and balance of a complex and structured great red wine from Haut-Médoc

The estate

Beautifully located on the left bank of Bordeaux, the Château La Lagune stands out among the very beautiful references of the Haut-Médoc appellation. Since 2004, Caroline Frey has been using her talent to raise Château La Lagune to the top.

The vineyard

Located on a gravelly ridge, the vineyard of Château La Lagune extends over 80 hectares. The vines are cultivated following the practices of organic and biodynamic agriculture. The grape varieties of this essential property of Haut-Médoc are composed of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage revealed capricious weather and subject to various excesses. The mild and dry winter triggered the early budding of the vines at the end of March. The flowering takes place under humid weather after the disbudding work carried out in May. Finally, the summer arrives, hot and dry, the vine compensates for the water stress thanks to its terroir. The colour change begins on July 29 and ends between mid-August and the end of August. The harvest at Château La Lagune began on September 18 with the Merlots, and ended on October 9 on the Mlle L vineyard. Throughout the year, the work carried out by the technical teams and the biodynamic management of the vineyard have made it possible to cope with climatic variations. The result was up to the work provided with a superb healthy and homogeneous harvest.
