Château Larcis Ducasse 2016: a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru with balanced tannins

A Saint-Emilion First Great Classified Growth B, Château Larcis Ducasse is a red wine produced in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. With vines averaging 35 years, the vineyard covers 11 hectares (including 9 hectares in production) and benefits from very diverse soils among the Saint-Émilion plateau, the Grande Côte de Saint-Émilion and the foot of the Côte Saint-Emilion. The wine is aged in barrels (new and one-year-old barrels). The blend of Château Larcis Ducasse 2016 consists of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc.

Rainy weather and an extremely dry summer marked the 2016 Château Larcis Ducasse vintage. The quality of the vineyards and the terroir could balance these extreme conditions to offer an exceptional wine.

The Château Larcis Ducasse 2016 presents an expressive nose that exudes blackberry and cranberry aromas mixed with oaky notes due to ageing. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and offers balanced tannins. We can note spicy and peppery flavours that blend perfectly with a beautiful tension.

This comment is intended to describe the general profile of the wine at a given moment. Be aware that the wine can evolve in the bottle over time and express other organoleptic qualities.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Larcis-Ducasse is a blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc picked between 12-19 October, matured in 225- and 500-liter barrels. It matured in 50% new oak, which is a lower proportion than you would have found in 2009 or 2010. It has a lively, expressive bouquet with detailed blackberry, briary and cranberry aromas that are neatly embroidered with the new oak, allowing the terroir to show through. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well balanced, quite spicy and peppery in the mouth but maintaining satisfying tension from start to finish. This is a very well crafted Larcis-Ducasse although I hope that during the élevage it will just gain more persistence on the aftertaste. One to watch.
