A balanced and powerful fine Pauillac wine

The estate

Situated at the entrance of Pauillac, Château Lynch Bages is an estate that has left its mark on the history of the Médoc wine region. Although the terroir of Bages has been known since the 16th century, it wasn’t until the 18th century that it gained its recognition. With the son of an Irish citizen named Thomas Lynch at the helm, the Bages wine was recognised at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Château Lynch-Bages became part of the J-M Cazes family on the eve of the Second World War and is one of the finest references among the fine Pauillac wines.

The vineyard

Château Lynch-Bages watches over an exceptional 90- hectare vineyard, planted on Garonne gravel.

The vintage

A contrasting winter preceded a cool spring, with rainfall that did not make up for the cumulative water deficit of recent years. From July 15th to September 24th, the hot and particularly dry weather conditions had an impact on the grape’s uneven ripeness and their size. Veraison, like flowering, was slow. This terroir’s typical deep and clayey gravels alleviate the water stress and ensure that the grapes ripen progressively until the harvest.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted in the vineyard. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 75% of which are new.

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (71%)

Merlot (26%)

Cabernet Franc (2%)

Petit Verdot (1%).

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2012 Lynch-Bages is deep ruby/purple with tell-tale cassis notes. Medium-bodied, but somewhat foursquare and monolithic, it has well above average concentration, impressive purity and nicely integrated tannins and wood. Nevertheless, there is something bland and one-dimensional about Lynch-Bages in 2012, making it somewhat of a disappointment. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.
