James Suckling

A firm and silky red with plum and cherry aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Try from 2022.

Very sweet and a little stewed. Tough dry tannins on the end. (JR)

The 2016 Roylland is very nicely lifted and perfumed, with pretty floral notes that add freshness to a core of red berry fruit. Although not especially complex, this fruity, mid-weight Saint-Émilion has a lot to offer. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. The 2016 is a very pretty wine. Tasted two times.

Classic nose of coffee, mocha, crushed berries; dense palate still restrained, medium to long finish, needs time.

Spicy, serious, with tannins still a bit tight.

This 5-ha estate, located on loam-limestone and clay-limestone soils, produced around 30,000 bottles in 2016. The average vine age is young at 15 years. Planting density ranges from 5,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare. Harvest took place from October 8 to 13. Bottling occurred in May 2018. Garnet-red color with violet highlights. Delicate, elegant bouquet with fruity notes. A touch of graphite. Juicy, gourmand character on the palate. The wine has body, a hint of richness, and fine-grained tannins. It still lacks aromatic expression on the palate, but the existing elements are promising, and the finish confirms Roylland’s ability to reveal fruit.

What a wonderful surprise! This is the most precise Roylland on the nose and palate that I’ve tasted. On the palate, the structure is deep, the flavor intense, the body full, and the finish caressing.
