Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for Château Saint-Pierre 2000
Tasting
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, saturated purple hue, almost opaque, with subtle brick-red nuances at the rim and thick legs.
Nose
Complex and expressive, the nose exudes rich aromas of jammy black fruits such as blackcurrant and blackberry. With aeration, it reveals a superb tertiary dimension blending notes of cedar, tobacco, cigar box, graphite and delicate smoky touches.
Palate
Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate offers a classic structure underpinned by fine acidity. Once firm, the tannins have softened to become silky and polished. The whole unfolds elegantly towards a persistent finish, dominated by flavours of fine wood and undergrowth.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs perfectly with roasted or grilled red meats such as rack of lamb or rib of beef. It also goes wonderfully with game in a light sauce, duck, as well as mushroom or root vegetable accompaniments.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate Château Saint-Pierre 2000, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, after decanting for a few hours. In terms of ageing potential, this vintage has reached its peak of maturity and, according to official critics' estimates, was to be enjoyed until around 2020, although it can hold up well under good cellar conditions.
The Depth and Elegance of a Great Saint-Julien Cru
The Estate
The winemaking history of this terroir dates back to the 16th century, but the estate's founding under the name Serançan is documented as early as 1693. It was renamed Château Saint-Pierre in 1767. Located in the heart of the Médoc, in Bordeaux, France, this Fourth Growth of the 1855 Classification underwent numerous divisions before being reunified in 1982 by Henri Martin. Today, Françoise Triaud owns this 17-hectare gem, while Jean-Louis Triaud oversees its management. Discreet and precious, the estate stands out for its transition towards organic viticulture.
The Vineyard
The smallest classified growth in the Saint-Julien appellation, the vineyard spans 17 hectares of deep, well-draining gravel soils located close to the Gironde estuary. The vines, with an average age of 60 years, benefit from rigorous plot-by-plot selection and are farmed with a focus on organic viticulture, encouraging a pure and concentrated expression of the terroir.
The Vintage
Recognised as a great Bordeaux vintage, the year 2000 benefited from particularly favourable weather conditions. This mild climate allowed the grapes to reach optimal maturity, resulting in structured, concentrated wines built for long ageing.
Winemaking and Ageing
The winemaking process for Château Saint-Pierre 2000 aims for controlled extraction to achieve a solid structure. Traditional ageing takes place in French oak barrels, harmoniously blending the wood with the fruit to develop the aromatic complexity characteristic of this cru.
Grape Varieties
The estate's vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
