Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Medium light ruby-colored, with sweet, smoky, herb-tinged, toasty, cherry, and berry flavors, this is an attractive, light to medium-bodied wine with soft tannin, low acidity, and little depth or finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Wine Spectator

Wonderfully aromatic, with beautiful plum and toasted oak character on the nose. Medium-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium, fruity finish. Drink now through 2002.

Decanter

Chocolate, cacao and coffee powder. Fragrant and herbal red berry notes as well as soy, mushroom, truffle and cedar. Chewy, ripe but cool and fleshy in a great way - tannins fill the mouth giving structure and support to the floral and ripe raspberry and red cherry fruit. Acidity is well integrated, giving lift and bounce and this carries the juiciness through to a long finish. I like the minerality too, liquorice and flint. Soft markers with tobacco and dark chocolate giving the nuance on the end. A really nice glass of wine with lots of life, charm, energy, texture, weight and length.

Vinous

Stephen Tanzer

Deep medium red. Evolving aromas of plum, tobacco, tar and animal fur. Supple, round and gamey in the mouth, with moderate concentration and density. Also slightly green on the end.

Weinwisser

Medium ruby-garnet in color, bright. On the nose, an open, pleasant bouquet with light toasty notes, finely jammy fruit and hints of cherry. On the palate, elegant and creamy, smooth and melting, with a delicate candy note on the finish and a lovely, elegant length. Great fun to drink.

René Gabriel

98: Quite deep purple. Powerful, expansive bouquet showing lovely fullness, a warm feel, and a note of fine oak. On the palate, velvety, with good substance, balanced astringency, concentrated extract, and a long finish. At last, an extraordinary Domaine de Chevalier again. 17/20 2004–2014 Medium ruby-garnet, bright. Open, pleasantly toasty bouquet, slightly jammy fruit with hints of cherry. On the palate, elegant, creamy, flowing with gentle silkiness, a delicate candy note on the finish, beautiful, elegant length. Very enjoyable.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Bordeaux red color. Medium intensity. Nose of medium intensity. Smoky. Fruity. Ripe (no greenness in the 97s). Very pleasant on swirling. Cedar. Resin. A rounded, very charming wine, present on the mid-palate and then on the finish, with flavor, medium body, seductive character, and a slight liveliness at the end. It will be enjoyable without delay. Its showcasing will depend on how it is served. Preferably next summer.

Description

Complex and refined, a seductive Pessac-Léognan red wine

The producer

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the beautiful Domaine de Chevalier is among the finest Bordeaux Crus Classés. This iconic estate is located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, to the south of Bordeaux, and is surrounded by a green haven.

The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier overlooks a rare 50-hectare vineyard dedicated to the production of red wine. The vineyard lies on a gravelly soil with a clay and gravel subsoil.

The vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates and are rigorously sorted in the vineyard, then in the cellar before and after destemming. The vinification is carried out in a plot-by-plot manner in two vats (one of which is a concrete tulip-shaped tank). The wine is aged in barrels (1/3 of which are new) for 16 to 18 months, with regular stirring of the lees during the first 4 months.

The blend

Domaine de Chevalier 1997 comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).

The tasting

Colour

Brilliant, with a beautiful dark ruby colour.

Nose

Ethereal and intense, the nose combines ripe fruit fragrances (plum) with advanced aromas of black truffles, graphite, spices as well as smoky and liquorice notes.

Palate

Full, this wine seduces the palate with its melted tannins and its silky feel. Very elegant, the palate reveals a beautiful fruity expression, leading to a fresh and persistent finish.
