Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Saumur-Champigny "Les Closiers" 2023 from Domaine des Closiers

Tasting

Colour
With beautiful intensity, the colour reveals a deep red.

Nose
Pure and refreshing, the nose reveals a lovely aromatic intensity carried by notes of ripe red and black fruits, evoking blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry and elderberry.

Palate
The palate seduces with its generosity and juicy fruitiness, accompanied by a subtle floral touch. True to its appellation, this wine retains great lightness as well as a lovely finesse. The finish, fleshy and pure, is supported by invigorating tannins and a refreshing minerality drawn from its limestone terroir.

Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with dishes featuring aromatic herbs, such as roast chicken with a tarragon and rosemary cream sauce, or with flavourful meats like a lamb navarin.

The elegance and purity of a red wine from the Loire Valley

The estate
Located in the heart of the Loire wine region, Domaine des Closiers was established in its current form in 2018, when it was acquired by Anatole de La Brosse, its current owner. This passionate winemaker now manages a 24-hectare vineyard, 15 hectares of which are in production. The estate's name pays tribute to the local winegrowers of old who once lived in troglodyte cellars. Certified organic, the estate stands out for its nature-friendly approach and meticulous teamwork to bring out the very best of its terroirs.

The vineyard
The vines, with an average age of 35 years, flourish mainly on the hillsides of the village of Parnay, within the Saumur-Champigny appellation. Unlike most of the region, this terroir is characterised by gentle slopes and shallow clay-limestone soils, resting on a bedrock of Turonian limestone. The estate favours environmentally friendly practices, such as cover cropping and soil cultivation, to encourage biodiversity and enhance the mineral expression of the grapes.

The vintage
2023 was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. Despite these difficulties throughout the growing season, the vines drew on their resources to deliver a harvest of great quality, combining succulence and restraint.

Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the "Les Closiers" 2023 cuvée are harvested and hand-sorted on three separate occasions. After a cold maceration, fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts at a low temperature. Extraction is carried out gently through infusion for over a month. The wine is then aged, with 30% spending nine months in barrels while the remainder matures in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

Grape variety
Cabernet Franc (100%).
