Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep ruby hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals notes of black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry. It is enriched by floral touches reminiscent of violet, delicate spices such as pepper, and a mineral dimension evoking graphite.
Palate
Structured and harmonious, the palate offers lovely acidic tension and firm tannins, delicately polished by ageing. The tasting extends into a long finish marked by persistent minerality.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs perfectly with duck breast, boeuf bourguignon or game birds. It is also a wonderful match for mature hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or Cantal.
Serving and ageing
This Moulin-à-Vent "Le Vieux Bourg" 2024 can be enjoyed in its youth, while also offering ageing potential of more than a decade.
The finesse and expression of an estate in the heart of Beaujolais
The estate
Founded in 2021, Domaine Mont Bessay is located on the heights of Juliénas, on the border between Burgundy and Beaujolais in France. Born of the partnership between Philippe Pascal and oenologist Guillaume Marko, the current owners, the estate draws its inspiration from Burgundian methods. It stands out for its rigorous plot-by-plot approach and its certified organic and biodynamic viticulture. With the ambition of becoming a benchmark for quality among the region's crus, the estate produces wines that combine depth, tension and minerality, faithfully reflecting the richness of their high-altitude terroirs.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes from the lieu-dit Le Vieux Bourg, a micro-plot of around 0.5 hectares located in the upper part of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, in the commune of Chénas. Rising to more than 320 metres above the famous windmill, this free-draining terroir consists exclusively of poor granitic sands. The vines, grown from massal selections and gobelet-trained, are cultivated according to biodynamic principles. They produce naturally low yields, encouraging a high concentration in the berries.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, followed by rigorous sorting on a vibrating table. The vinification of the Moulin-à-Vent "Le Vieux Bourg" 2024 involves a high proportion of whole bunches, along with foot treading. The macerations are long and gentle, lasting around three weeks to favour a delicate extraction. The wine is then aged in mostly used oak barrels for just over twelve months, refining the tannic structure while preserving the purity of the fruit.
