Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Earthy and savory, offering delicate red fruit merged with bolts of iron, warm soil and white pepper. There's a gentleness to this red, with forest floor accents adding charm, along with a savory, tangy beam of acidity. Retains a juicy edge through the finish. Drink now through 2026. 2,100 cases imported.

A prototypical Crozes-Hermitage, at the lighter end of the scale for this appellation, but with the juicy briar character we expect from this appellation. Supple tannins underline all this very nicely. Plenty of dried herbs in the finish. Drink now.

Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

The 2021 Crozes-Hermitage opens with a slice of grapefruit, followed by discreet strawberry, leafy nuances and peppery gradations, all of moderate intensity. Touching the palate with modest flavor concentration, the 2021 finishes with a juicy yet fairly short conclusion.

La RVF

Nothing to fault in this cuvée crafted for immediate enjoyment, with a palate already settled and a clean, precise fruit that invites drinking now. In this rather gentle vintage, pleasure is guaranteed.

Wine Enthusiast

A classic and rustic expression, this wine showcases rich red cherries and currants, with subtle notes of cedar, fine herbs, and violet aromas. Fruit-forward yet alluringly savory, it offers youthful tannins that coat the mouth, supporting a midpalate of lush black plum, charcuterie, and light black tea. The finish is defined by a fine granitic edge. Enjoy now with a proper decant, or cellar through 2035+.

Yohan Castaing

Notes of lilac, iris and dark cherries introduce the 2021 Crozes-Hermitage from Maison E. Guigal, a medium- to full-bodied, round and sappy wine built around a juicy core of fruit and concluding with a long, charming finish.

The estate

Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Etienne Guigal, Domaine E. Guigal was taken over by his son Marcel in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation carries on the legacy and values of this family-run House, an emblematic name of the Rhône Valley. Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage: the E. Guigal estate cultivates a mosaic of vineyards spread across numerous appellations, offering a range of wines of impeccable quality. Over the vintages, the House of E. Guigal has grown considerably, notably acquiring the famous Château d'Ampuis in 1995, as well as several wine estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine and Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

The vineyard

This Crozes-Hermitage cuvée comes from clay-loam and sandy-gravelly soils. The vines, around 35 years old and mostly located on hillsides, come mainly from the villages of Gervans, Mercurol, Larnage and Crozes-Hermitage.

Vinification and ageing

Traditional harvesting and vinification, with controlled temperatures during alcoholic fermentation. The maceration of this Rhône Valley wine lasts around three weeks.

Blend

Syrah (100%).
