Robert Parker

Monica Larner

This is a mid-tier blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. Tenuta Luce 2022 Lucente opens to an inky black appearance. The wine shows oak-driven aromas of cedar and pinewood. But the effect is quite soft and hydrated. You get barbecued flavors and a hint of hickory meat. All the elements are there to underline an international-minded red blend. Production hovers at 400,000 bottles made annually.

This is supple, with a salty cast to its cherry, blackberry and plum fruit. Earth and iron notes add detail as this remains fresh on the lingering finish. Offers fine balance and is ready to enjoy. Merlot and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2030. 33,333 cases made, 6,500 cases imported.

Decanter

Polished, glossy aromas have a healthy dose of expensive oak in support, but this is actually fresh and nicely balanced, with impressive fluidity on the palate and some concentrated dried blackberry fruit. An impressive effort in a torrid Tuscan vintage.

This is round and creamy, offering ripe blackberries, blueberries and hints of chocolate and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied with succulent fruit and fine tannins. Compact and focused, with good length and overall balance. Drink now or hold.

Full bottle 1,274g. Merlot and Sangiovese (but the estate is tight-lipped about the proportions) fermented in stainless steel with a total maceration on the skins of 20 days, but it is unclear which variety was fermented in what way, as they undoubtedly were not co-fermented. More info please! Total acidity 5.73 g/l. Impenetrable dark crimson. Luxurious nose of oak and black forest fruit yet lively, even if it is a little formulaic. There was only 10 days of skin contact, clearly because any longer and the tannins would be massive. There is a little astringency to this wine but overall it is hedonistic, as always. (WS)

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Lucente 2022 from Frescobaldi - Tenuta Luce della Vite

Tasting

Colour
Beautiful ruby red colour.

Nose
Intense, the nose reveals fruity fragrances (pomegranate, blackberry) and violet that combine with elegant spices.

Palate
A broad and enveloping attack gives way to a palate whose balance, vivacity and tannic structure stretch harmoniously to a persistent and gourmet finish.

The freshness and creaminess of a great Tuscan wine

The property

A great Florentine family devoted to the production of Tuscan wines, the Frescobaldis have been established on this land of history for over 1000 years. Their influence increased considerably during the period of the Republic of Florence, at the time of the development of the city's banking industry. The family notably took part in the great works of art of the time, such as the Santa Trinita Bridge and the Santo Spirito Basilica. Located in the Montalcino area, southwest of the medieval city, Frescobaldi- Tenuta Luce Della Vite, one of the family properties, produces crus among the greatest Italian wines.

The vineyard

The estate extends over 192 hectares, 55 of which are planted with vines, with an average density of 6,100 vines per hectare. With an altitude ranging from 350 to 420 meters above sea level, Tenuta Luce Della Vite has one of the highest vineyards in the area. The lands rich in pebbles and sediments but poor in organic matter, combined with a beautiful exposure on the south slope, bring together the ideal conditions to produce great Tuscan wines. It is in the lower part of the vineyard, on clay soils, that merlot and cabernet sauvignon are planted.

The vintage

A cool and dry winter slightly delays bud break. Warm and with low rainfall, spring allows rapid vegetative development, with flowering at the end of May / beginning of June. If these warm and dry conditions persist during the summer, rainy episodes restart the maturities.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification in thermo-regulated steel tanks. Fermentation for 10 days followed by a skin maceration for 20 days. Malolactic fermentation in steel tanks before ageing for 12 months in barrels.

Blend

Merlot and sangiovese.
