Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Grattamacco 2023

Tasting Notes

Colour
This wine reveals a bright, deep ruby red hue.

Nose
The bouquet displays great aromatic depth, marked by notes of ripe red fruits such as cherry and pomegranate. This is delicately underscored by floral touches and earthy nuances reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis.

Palate
Dynamic and well-balanced, the palate shows a vigorous structure supported by lovely tension. It stands out for its remarkable freshness, a pronounced mineral backbone, and tannins that are both fine and ripe, leading to a persistent and elegant finish.

Food and Wine Pairing
This great red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or sauced red meats, such as a matured rib of beef or a herb-crusted rack of lamb. It will also beautifully complement game dishes, such as a wild boar stew, as well as aged hard cheeses like pecorino.

Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate the Grattamacco 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 18 and 20°C, after decanting for one to two hours. With excellent ageing potential, it can be cellared for approximately 10 to 20 years.

The Elegance of a Great Tuscan Wine by Grattamacco

The Estate
Founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Grattamacco is a pioneering estate located in Tuscany, on the hills of Bolgheri. Now run by Claudio Tipa and the Tipa-Bertarelli family, the estate covers 80 hectares, 28 of which are planted with vines and farmed organically. A true benchmark for the region, this historic estate has made its mark by actively contributing to the recognition of the great local red wines, skilfully combining agronomic innovation with deep respect for its exceptional terroir.

The Vineyard
The vines grown to produce this Bolgheri Superiore thrive at altitudes ranging from 100 to 200 metres, facing the sea. With an average age of 25 years, they benefit from a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes and protected by the surrounding woodlands. The distinctive terroir is composed of calcareous sandstone, sodium-rich white clays, and fossil-rich flysch marls. The vineyard is managed with low yields, in strict respect for the environment, thanks to certified organic practices in place for over twenty years.

Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for Grattamacco 2023 are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in open oak vats, accompanied by gentle, regular manual punching down of the cap. A long maceration allows for slow extraction, refining the tannic structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels before being bottled in July 2025, without prior filtration.

Grape Varieties
This wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Sangiovese.
