Vinum

La Louvée is the down-to-earth, slightly more rugged counterpart to the elegant, precise, filigreed les Ruchets: generous and spicy in character, full-bodied in build, with ripe tannins and a dense, full finish; let it mature a little longer.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This drips with cassis, blackberry pâte de fruit and plum sauce flavors, maintaining terrific verve. The iron spine and bay leaf- and sweet tapenade–fueled finish keeps this grounded. Long and sleek, with mouthwatering acidity stitching everything together. Best from 2016 through 2026. 260 cases made.

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Bright purple. Fresh black raspberry and blueberry aromas are complemented by dried violet, anise and olive. Chewy dark fruit flavors show very good concentration and clarity, along with a sweet vanilla touch on the back half. Finishes with chewy, mineral-accented cherry and cassis flavors and excellent persistence.

Wine Enthusiast

Joe Czerwinski

Plummy and ripe, with a sheen of glossy, cedary oak, this is as plush as it gets in the northern Rhône. It's full-bodied, supple and open, with a long, velvety finish. Drink now–2030.

Description

The elegance and richness of a wine from Cornas by Jean-Luc Colombo

The producer

Epicurean oenologists, Jean-Luc Colombo and his wife founded in 1987 the eponymous domain, with the ambition to elaborate great wines of Cornas magnifying the potential of this Rhone Valley terroir . Passionate, Jean-Luc Colombo favours parcellary winemaking in order to produce a pure and authentic expression of the old vineyards that make up its vineyard.

The wine

The appellation Cornas is composed of granitic terraces overlooking the Rhone, covering an area of 110 hectares. The origin of the La Louvée du Domaine Colombo cuvée and home of Syrah, this unique terroir produces wines of character combining minerality, depth, power and complexity. The older vineyards of the estate, up to 90 years, are located on a south-facing vineyard.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvested manually in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit, the grapes are scraped and then vinified in thermo-regulated vats for one month. With a duration of 22 months, the ageing is carried out in oak barrels, of which 85% are of one to three previous wines and 15% are new.

Blend

Jean-Luc Colombo's La Louvée 2011 is a 100% Syrah.

Tasting

Colour

Superb, the wine is an intense deep red colour.

Nose

Powerful and complex, the nose mixes fragrances of black fruit, gun powder and liquorice with tasty notes of garrigue.

Palate

Harmonious and concentrated, the palate seduces with its elegance, its balance and its finish, which reveals ripe and silky tannins.

Service

For an optimal tasting, serve at 18°C after decanting the wine.

Guard

This wine of Cornas can wait in your cellar until 2031 to reveal the whole of its aromatic palette.

Food and wine pairing

La Louvée 2011 by Jean-Luc Colombo will go perfectly with red meats (pigeon cooked in a casserole).
