Vinum

Fresh, slightly herbal nose with red cherry, blackcurrant and a subtle roasted note; on the palate, approachable, soft, with fine, not overpowering tannins, balanced, with a fruity finish. Enjoy young, for its fruit.

Decanter

Lightly presented, this has purity and clarity but is a touch sour and a little lacking in structure, with a tapering of fruit flavour and some wet-stone, graphite-laced tannins and accents on the finish. It leans nicely into the vintage, with no heavy-handedness, and should be a soft yet bright wine after ageing.

Cigar box, cocoa, black raspberries, and currants fill the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, crisp, racy, and vibrant, with a focus on its peppery notes, currants, and red plums on the mid-palate, as well as on the finish. I like the touch of mint that refreshes the palate and shows up on the finish. You can enjoy this upon release. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 12.4% ABV. Drink from 2027-2037. 90-92 pts

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for L’Esprit de Chevalier Red 2024

Tasting

Nose
The nose opens with a beautiful intensity, mixing small red and black fruits with notes of fresh humus.

Palate
In the mouth, the wine is already charming with its smoothness and accessibility. A dense structure, carried by noble tannins, suggests a significant aging potential. The balance is remarkable, with a generous aromatic richness faithful to the identity of the Chevalier terroir.

A complex and balanced Second Red Wine from Pessac-Léognan

The property

Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the magnificent Domaine de Chevalier is at the top of the greatest Classified Growths of Bordeaux. The estate is located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, which is situated in a green setting south of Bordeaux. L’Esprit de Chevalier is the second wine of the estate.

The vineyard

Domaine de Chevalier is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a rare 67-hectare vineyard, resting on a gravelly terroir with clay-gravel subsoils, of which 60 hectares are dedicated to red wine. Since 1986, the young vines have been destined to ripen the berries that contribute to the blend of the estate's second wine, L’Esprit de Chevalier.

The vintage

The vintage benefited from a mild winter followed by a wet spring without frost, promoting vigorous vine growth. A dry and hot summer allowed for beautiful maturity, while the harvest, carried out with precision until October 5, achieved an excellent level of quality.

Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting in crates during which a meticulous sorting in the vineyard is carried out, the berries are again sorted in the winery before and after destemming. The grapes are vinified in stainless steel, concrete and wood vats before aging in barrels for 14 months.

Blend

Cabernet sauvignon (60 %)
Merlot (35 %)
Petit verdot (5 %).
